Paraphrasing is simply re-writing a phrase or sentence so that it has the same meaning, but with different words.
Paraphrasing is one of the most important skills to learn before doing your IELTS test. It is most important for writing and speaking, but will also help you in the reading and listening tests.
In other words, if you know how to paraphrase you are more likely to get the score you need.
These are the four main methods you should use in the IELTS test to paraphrase sentences.
1. Use synonyms
2. Change the word order
3. Change the form of the word
4. Change the sentence structure.
However, just doing those things above is not enough. The sentence must actually mean the same as before and it must also be grammatically correct.
For example, you might think that changing the word 'famous' to a word like 'popular' is correct? In most circumstances, this would be wrong because they have different, but similar, meanings. Donald Trump is certainly famous (many people KNOW him) but I don't think many people would say he is popular (many people LIKE him).
