Apollo Pickleball Player Information
We are passionate about creating resilient and healthy communities that embrace movement, play, inclusivity and kindness. Our goal is to provide emotionally safe spaces for 2SLGBTQI+ individuals as well as their friends, family members and allies (regardless of sexual orientation); to come together in community as PROUD Players.
If you are not sure what an “ally” is in the LGBTQAI+ acronym, this will help: A straight ally or heterosexual ally (often simply called an ally) is a heterosexual and cisgender person who supports equal civil rights, gender equality, and LGBTQ+ social movements. Individuals may meet this designation through their actions without actively identifying as an ally.
The following is expected of all PROUD Players:
1.BE KIND
This includes other players, venue staff, and other people at the venue not with Apollo. Outbursts and rudeness won’t be tolerated. Our culture is important; you represent Apollo Pickleball at our venues.
2.“BALL!”
When your ball goes onto another court yell “BALL!”. Keep yelling until the other players see the ball and stop. DO NOT run onto the court to retrieve the ball if the court is in play. If you hear “STOP” playing immediately and retrieve once it’s safe to do so.
3. NEVER RUN BACKWARDS
It’s the number 1 reason Pickleball players break their bones. Remind each other with kindness about this rule.
4. ATTIRE
Wear court shoes. They aren’t just a marketing ploy. Wearing runners increases your risk of rolling your ankle. Court shoes are built for pivots and side to side movements on a court. Also consider wearing protective eyewear if you don’t wear glasses.
5. BALL MANAGEMENT
When throwing a stray ball back to players on the court, try not to just swat it or chuck it in their general direction. Pick it up, make eye contact, toss it back with kindness. The same goes for returning a ball to your opponent over the net.
6. START & END WITH HEART
At the beginning of each game, meet at the net, introduce yourselves, share your pronouns (if not already displayed) and say hello. Similarly, at the end of each game, meet at the net, connect and appreciate the game you just played. Some players tap paddles (gently they aren’t cheap!), some tap the butts of their handles, some give high fives and some tap elbows. Do what’s appropriate for each other.
7. PLAY WITH EVERYONE
Be kind to each person you are partnered with even if they are at a lower skill level then you. Expect to play with a different person each game. During play, don’t play keep away from the best player just so you can win everyone wants to play.
8. CALL THE SCORE LOUDLY BEFORE SERVE
If you serve without calling the score, it’s technically a fault and the other team can call you on it and you’ll lose your serve. Or we can politely remind each other to do this by getting into ‘faulting’ people.
9. OUT/IN?
If you and your partner don’t know if a ball is in or out, it’s IN. The opposing team receiving your ball always makes the call if a ball is in or out. Accept their call gracefully even if you saw it differently
10. WAIT
Until everyone is ready before you serve.
11. CELEBRATE AND ENCOURAGE
Congratulate opponents and new players on amazing shots! Celebrate your opponent’s wins while still playing hard.
12. NO COACHING
Please don’t give people free coaching or lessons on the court (or ever). Unless someone asks you or pays you, resist the urge to correct others. ‘Mansplaining’ is generally not appreciated.
13. PACE OF GAME
Play your game through at a normal pace and try to be aware of time used on the court. The goal is for each player to play as many games with as many people as possible.
14. SMASH/LOB
Don’t lob or smash the ball at restricted players. We all know that you must do whatever it takes to win in a tournament setting. If that means lobbing behind players with restricted mobility or people who can hardly run for the ball, then so be it. But in recreational play, this is extremely disrespectful, cheap and annoying. Most movement restricted players aren’t going to bother even looking at a lobbed ball. But they may scowl at you instead as the ball is sailing over their head. You’ve won a free point, but at what cost? It’s not fun for anyone.
15. BALANCE
Balance between playing at your skill level and creaming others. If you find you are not feeling challenged at open play, let us know. We might set up an intermediate or advanced playtime. We are always open to feedback.
16. BEHIND THE PLAY
Don’t cross behind a match until play has stopped.
A good review and reminder!!
