We’re just a few days away. 🧡

National Indigenous Peoples Day at Studio Bell, home of the National Music Centre, is happening this Sunday, June 21, and it’s free and open to all!

This all-ages celebration will feature performances by award-winning throat-singing duo Tudjaat, country-folk-blues project Black Crow Funk, and techno/electronic artist Sean Beaver, who incorporates powwow elements into his hybrid sets of live loops and original music.

Visitors can explore a vendor market featuring local Indigenous artisans, and the updated Speak Up! exhibit, highlighting the stories of five newly added Indigenous musicians.

🎵 Artist Spotlight: Nia Devetzis

What exactly is percussion? For Calgary-based percussionist Nia Devetzis, the answer is constantly expanding.

As a soloist, chamber musician, improviser and theatre artist, her work explores the possibilities of sound across disciplines.

From composing a soundscape for La Vieja en la Mecedora with dance artist Alexandra Contreras to learning new instruments for Come From Away with Theatre Calgary, Devetzis is always pushing the boundaries of what music can be.

As part of our new blog series spotlighting artists in our Community Directory, Nia Devetzis shares what she’s currently working on, the ideas shaping her practice and why she’s excited for this year’s Sound Atlas Festival.

📢 Professional artists and artist teams from across Canada are invited to apply for a public art opportunity at the future Walden Fire Station and Library in southeast Calgary.

One artist or artist team will be selected to develop permanent public artwork(s) for the new civic facility. The artwork will explore themes related to the natural environment while responding to the building's architecture, surrounding community and site context.

Application deadline: July 28, 2026, at 1pm MT

A pre-recorded information session will be available online on June 30 to help artists learn more about the opportunity and application process.

CALL OUT for Installation Artists! Want to leave your mark on Calgary this winter? ❄️

Chinook Blast 2027 is calling for innovative art and design installations that will transform our festival site of Eau Claire Plaza & Prince's Island Lagoon. We're looking for creative proposals that invite people to stop, play and explore, inspire outdoor winter activity, and celebrate the best of Calgary as a winter city. Selected installations will be showcased at the Chinook Blast Hub at Eau Claire Plaza & Prince's Island Lagoon throughout the festival, running Friday, January 29th to Monday, February 15th, 2027.

Funding opportunities range from $2,000–$20,000. This callout is open to artists, architects, designers, students, and multi-disciplinary teams, locally and beyond, with priority given to Calgary-based creators.

For more than 40 years, the Youth Singers of Calgary have been helping young people find their voice, both on and off stage. What began as a small community organization has grown into one of Calgary’s most beloved performing arts institutions, shaping generations of singers, dancers, musicians, and leaders. 🎤

In our latest episode, join Adora as she meets many of the Youth Singers Of Calgary to discover what it takes to bring their spectacular performances to life. From rehearsals and choreography to costumes, volunteers, and the countless people who make each production possible, we explore the passion and dedication that fuels this remarkable organization.

We also hear from past and present members whose lives have been transformed through the program, including those who once stood on the stage as young performers and today help lead the organization. Through music, movement, and community, the Youth Singers continue to inspire confidence, creativity, and connection in young people across Calgary.

📢 An important milestone for Alberta’s arts community!

At an announcement in Calgary on June 14, the Canada Council for the Arts, with the Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Canadian Identity and Culture and Minister responsible for Official Languages, announced the Alberta Focus Fund, a $25 million investment over five years to support artists and arts organizations across the province.
