Legal and Commercial Services for International, Power and Projects in the Energy Sector

07/27/2022

Recently, the announced a 25% Energy Profits Levy (UKWindfallTax) on energy producer profits. In a populist move, the resultant £5 billion tax revenue will be deployed to abate high energy prices for UK consumers. When I heard this news item on , I immediately thought of John Wayne’s famous words: Life is hard, but it’s even harder if you’re stupid.

The Cold War & Dishes Best Served Cold 11/12/2021

The Cold War ended in 1992 with the collapse of the Soviet Union – or so we were told. Given recent events, we are starting to wonder about a totally different view of the world.

Could Putin serve an ironic revenge on the West? If he did, would the real end of the Cold War come in, say, 2028 and not 1992? Revenge is a dish best served cold after all.

The framework for subsurface Helium rights in the Alberta – which largely adopts that of traditional petroleum and natural gas tenure rights – fails to capture the nuances of Helium exploration and production. In our latest post, CITO examines a key aspect of the regulatory regime in Alberta that governs (potentially thwarts) the development of Helium resources – the “spacing unit” – and challenges its suitability in the economical development of Alberta’s Helium resources.

Towards a Nuanced Framework for Subsurface Helium Rights in Alberta In the last three years, a helium (He) balloon has developed in the wake of the sell-off of the U.S. reserves.
