The gut and brain are inextricably interconnected. While we absolutely need to raise awareness and talk more about youth mental health - we should also talk about solutions. This isn’t a hopeless situation. There are SO many reasons to believe there is HOPE and that each of us can make a difference. Simple, safe strategies like: sleep, choose healthy food more often, spend more time outside, exercise, reduce screen time … all of these can add up and improve health and mental well-being. There are many ways to influence gut health and doing so will improve brain health as well.

Better Brownies!!! Made by grade 7 students, “Ligma” and “Sigma” ( you know who you are). They put their own creativity into this healthier brownie recipe by adding strawberries to the batter and carefully placing banana bits on top. I love learning from the kids I’m supposed to be teaching nutrition/ cooking elective.

Sleep and gut health are heavily connected. Without sleep, our gut microbiome is compromised. With a poor gut microbiome, our sleep is negatively affected. Research shows that the brain and gut connection affects sleep regulation and behaviour (PubMed).
