Everyone loves a good before and after post. This is a kitchen we recently renovated with a full wall hex backsplash. The tiling was tedious but the job came out beautifully.

After nearly 20 years of being around it, way too many Google searches, and countless test pieces, I think I’m finally cracking the code on wood finishes.

Oils, waxes, shellacs, varnishes… the list goes on. It can be pretty intimidating jumping into the many options, but each option has its pros and cons. I’ve found in recent years that applying a wood conditioner to most pieces will reduce the variation in the look between wood species, slightly simplifying this process.

Cutting in a new egress window for the basement suite. Unfortunately my saw only cuts 5” deep into this 8” wall, so matching up the inside and outside cuts is pretty important for removal. Now time to frame it up and install the window.

In a renovation, any time walls are removed and the floor layout is reconfigured we always have to consider how the house’s heating/cooling will be affected with the new, generally more open spaces.

Luckily on this project we had a large open crawl space to reconfigure the ducting to work for the new layout. That meant no ripping open floors or cutting out portions of the ceiling and having to install bulkheads.

The tougher part is that you’re altering an already finished area which can mean tedious and careful tasks all the way from demo, to rough in, and refinishing. Not to mention trying to find matching finishes and wood grains. I think this specific task along with the project as a whole came out really nice. More pictures to come.
