Happy Relationship Tip Tuesday! đŤśđź
When your partner is venting, the instinct to âfix itâ usually makes things worse, even when youâre trying to help. Most of the time theyâre not handing you a problem to solve. Theyâre handing you a feeling to be met. đ
A few small swaps that change how the whole conversation lands:
𪴠Instead of âhave you tried ___?â â âwow, that sounds really frustrating.â Witness first, ideas later (if at all).Â
𪴠Instead of âit could be worseâ â âthatâs a lot.â Comparison shuts it down. Acknowledgment opens it up.Â
𪴠Instead of âwhat are you going to do?â â âIs there anything I can do, or do you just need me to listen?â Let them tell you what they actually need.Â
𪴠Instead of jumping in with your own story â âtell me more about that.â Your story can come later. Right now itâs theirs.
You donât have to feel like you âdidâ anything. Being heard is the thing. đż
If you and your partner keep landing in the same loop where one of you wants comfort and the other keeps offering solutions, thatâs something we work on with couples all the time. Book a free 20-minute phone consult or your first appointment at the link in bio âď¸
Whatâs the swap youâd add to this list? Drop it in the comments. đ¤

Itâs Pride. đ
For a lot of 2SLGBTQI+ folks, finding the right therapist isnât just about logistics - itâs about whether youâll spend the first six sessions explaining yourself instead of being met where you are.
Affirmative therapy isnât a rainbow on the website. Itâs what actually happens in the room. đŤśđź
A few things affirmative therapy looks like in practice:
𪴠Your identity isnât treated as the source of your problemsÂ
𪴠Sessions can hold the joy of being 2SLGBTQI+ alongside the harder parts - minority stress, family rupture, religious woundingÂ
𪴠Coming out (or not) is treated as your decision, your timeline, your contextÂ
𪴠Your relationship structures arenât pathologized
A few things affirmative therapy isnât:
âď¸ âI treat everyone the sameâÂ
âď¸ Curious questions that feel more like an interviewÂ
âď¸ Identity-blind avoidance - same problem, different packaging
If a past therapy experience left you feeling more alone, thatâs not on you. Fit matters, and the right one exists. đż
If youâve been looking for a therapist whoâll meet you where you are, weâre here. Book a free 20-minute phone consult or your first appointment at the link in bio âď¸

Save this if youâve been wondering whether itâs time to start dating again. đˇđ
Heartbreak doesnât really have a finish line. Some weeks you feel mostly okay. Then a song comes on at the grocery store and youâre back to square one.
So how do you know when youâre ready?
Honestly, you probably wonât feel 100% ready. Thereâs no âdingâ moment. But thereâs a difference between dating from a steadier place and dating to avoid being alone with the leftovers.
Some signs you might be in a good place to start:
𪴠You can think about your ex without it derailing your whole day
𪴠Youâre curious about someone, not desperate for someone
𪴠You can talk about what youâd want differently next time without it turning into shame
𪴠Youâre looking for connection, not proof that youâre lovable
Some signs the wound might still need a bit more time:
âď¸ Youâre swiping mostly to avoid being alone
âď¸ Youâre imagining your exâs reaction to every date
âď¸ You feel like you need to âwinâ
âď¸ A ânoâ from a stranger sends you spiraling.
Neither list makes you bad at this. Theyâre just useful information.
If youâre somewhere in the middle (most people are), thatâs the spot where therapy can really help.
Our therapists at Tri Lotus Psychotherapy can help you figure out what you actually want this time.

Save this one for the next time the spiral starts. đˇđ
If your anxietyâs felt a little quieter since the sun came back, youâre not imagining it. More daylight does actually help. It nudges your serotonin and your sleep, and over time that adds up to feeling more like yourself.
The part nobody warns you about: sometimes when things get a little easier, the anxiety youâve been white-knuckling through can get louder, not quieter. Itâs not that youâre going backwards. Itâs usually that you finally have a sliver of bandwidth to feel what youâve been pushing past for months.
A few small things that actually help (no spring cleanse required):
𪴠Get a few minutes of sunlight in the morning, even on the way to your car
𪴠Take one walk this week without your phone
𪴠If your body wants a nap, take the nap
𪴠Notice the moments when âbeing productiveâ is really just a way to avoid sitting still
If anxiety has been louder lately, thatâs worth taking seriously. Our therapists at Tri Lotus Psychotherapy can help you sort through whatâs actually coming up.

When emotions feel really big - anger, grief, panic, overwhelm - they can feel like they ARE you. Like thereâs no separation between the storm and the person standing in it. đ§ď¸
Thereâs a mindfulness teaching (from Pema ChĂśdrĂśn) that a lot of clients have found helpful when theyâre in that place:
âMy emotions are the weather. I am the sky.â âď¸â
Even the worst storm doesnât actually change the sky. Clouds move in, rain pours, wind howls - and the sky underneath is still there, still vast, still open. The weather just kind of happens on top of it. âď¸
It works similarly with feelings. A wave of grief or a spiral of anxiety can feel like everything in that moment. But if you notice yourself even being able to think âthis is anxiety,â thereâs already a part of you thatâs a step back from it. That noticing part is the sky in this metaphor. đ¤
A few ways to actually use this when youâre in the middle of a hard moment:
𪴠Name whatâs happening - âokay, a wave of anxiety is here right nowâ
𪴠Try the slight shift: instead of âI am anxious,â it can be âanxiety is moving through meâ
𪴠Remind yourself the feeling will pass eventually, even when it really doesnât feel like it will
𪴠Notice the part of you observing - that part isnât IN the storm, itâs witnessing it
Thereâs more to you than whatever feeling is moving through in any given moment. đď¸

Save this for the last stretch. đˇđ
If youâve felt your energy just kind of leaking out the last few weeks - same. The end of the school year, the unspoken pressure to âmake summer perfect,â the lingering Mental Health Awareness Month âshouldsâ... it all adds up.
May looks like spring on paper. For a lot of us - parents, teachers, anyone in a caregiving role - it can actually feel like the slowest, heaviest month of the year.
A few signs you might be running on fumes:
𪴠Youâre snapping at things that didnât bother you a month ago
𪴠You canât remember the last time you did nothing without guilt
𪴠Youâre already stressed about âwastingâ summer
𪴠The to-do list keeps getting longer but somehow you feel further behind
This isnât a discipline problem. You probably need fewer things on your plate.
What can help:
𪴠Lower the bar for the next two weeks (good enough is fine)
𪴠Block one ânothingâ afternoon a week, no plans, no productivity
𪴠Say no to one thing your past self wouldâve said yes to
𪴠Catch yourself when âplanning summerâ is actually anxiety in a planner
If youâre walking into June already empty, thatâs worth a conversation.
Our therapists at Tri Lotus Psychotherapy can help you build something sustainable instead of just white-knuckling through.

Happy Relationship Tip Tuesday đŤś!
The biggest reason fights spiral isnât usually that you disagree. Itâs the words you reach for in the heat of it, the ones that feel right in the moment but make the other person dig in.
A few small swaps that change how the whole conversation lands:
𪴠Instead of âyou always ___â â âwhen ___ happened, I felt ___.â
One moment, not a pattern accusation.
𪴠Instead of âIâm fineâ when youâre not â âI need a minute. Can we come back to this in 20?â Gives both of you an off-ramp.
𪴠Instead of âyouâre overreactingâ â âI donât get it yet, but I want to. Tell me more.â Curiosity instead of dismissal.
𪴠Instead of âfine, whateverâ â âI need some time before I can talk about this without escalating.â Still a boundary, without the slammed door.
None of this is about being perfectly regulated in every fight. Youâll mess this up. We all do. The repair after, coming back, naming what you missed, is what actually builds the trust.
If your fights have been getting stuck in the same loop, thatâs something we work on with couples all the time.

If youâve made it to adulthood without a diagnosis, thatâs not proof that nothing is wrong. For so many people, itâs proof of how incredibly hard theyâve been working just to keep up. đ
Masking. High-functioning coping. Gendered gaps in how ADHD has historically been identified. These are systemic reasons â not personal failures.
A late diagnosis isnât a consolation prize. For many people, itâs life-changing. Itâs the moment the story shifts from âwhatâs wrong with me?â to âoh â this is how my brain works.â đ§ â¨
We wrote about this in our newest blog post, because we think more people deserve to hear it.

Feeling uncertain about what youâre walking into with an ADHD assessment can feel daunting đŞ
So letâs demystify it. đ
The process is collaborative â not clinical and cold.
Itâs a series of conversations, structured tools, and a detailed report that gives you real language for your real experience, whether thatâs therapy, medical support, or simply understanding.
And just so we say it plainly: this is not a test you can fail. đż
Itâs to help you finally understand whatâs been going on â and whatâs possible from here.
𪴠A conversation about what youâre currently experiencing
𪴠A review of your history â school, work, relationships, and how your brain has shown up across all of it
𪴠Standardized tools to assess attention and executive functioning 𪴠A comprehensive written report and a feedback session to walk through it together
We offer ADHD assessments for adults and teens (16+) at Tri Lotus Psychotherapy Inc. in Calgary.
