At Performance Institute, we're serious about helping our clients achieve their goals...
But we're definitely not serious all the time.
Elite figure skater Nikolai Kaldanian trains at PI to pursue some pretty ambitious athletic goals. But during one recent session, Nikolai arrived with a challenge of a different kind...
A Thumb Wrestling Championship. ๐๐ฅ
After an intense battle (the details are still being reviewed by officials ๐), we're pleased to announce that Coach Nathan emerged victorious.
Displaying true sportsmanship, Nikolai presented Nathan with the official Thumb Wrestling Championship Belt to commemorate the occasion.
Congratulations, Nathan, on your hard-fought title... and thank you, Nikolai, for reminding us that while we work hard, there's always room for a little fun.
Because the best gyms don't just build stronger bodiesโthey build friendships, laughter, and a community people genuinely enjoy being part of. โค๏ธ

Quite often.
One of the biggest misconceptions in fitness is that you should always be making exercises harder.
At Performance Institute, we see it differently.
We work with many clients over 40, and that means every session starts by listening to the body. We use self-release techniques, mobility work, and movement preparation to help clients move well before they train hard.
Some days, squats and lunges feel great.
Other days, they don't.
Rather than forcing an exercise that isn't right that day, we'll modify it to keep training the same movement pattern while reducing stress where it's needed.
In this video, Sandra is performing a single-leg step-up with the focus on driving through the top legโnot pushing off the bottom foot.
It may look simpler than a lunge, but it's still building:
โ
Single-leg strength
โ
Balance
โ
Hip, knee, and ankle stability
โ
Control and coordination
โ
Confidence for everyday life
Whether that's climbing stairs, hiking a mountain, or simply feeling more stable on one leg, these qualities matter.
The goal isn't to avoid lunges forever.
The goal is to choose the right exercise for today, so that tomorrow you're stronger, more capable, and ready to progress again.
Sometimes the smartest training decision isn't pushing throughโit's choosing the exercise your body needs most.

We know long weekends are a great opportunity to relax, recharge, and spend time with family and friendsโฆ
โฆbut theyโre also a great chance to keep the momentum youโve been building! ๐ช
Performance Institute will be open for live group training only on Monday, August 3rd (BC Day) from:
โฐ 5:45 AM โ 1:00 PM
If your regular session is affected by the holiday schedule, please take a quick look at your schedule and connect with our Admin Team so we can help you find another training time.
Enjoy the long weekend โ and/or weโll see you in the gym! ๐
Are you actually making progress... or have you just forgotten what success looks like? ๐ค
One of the biggest challenges we seeโespecially with long-term exercisersโis that once they achieve their original goal, it's easy to stop recognizing the progress they're still making.
Maybe you've:
โ
Lost the weight you wanted to lose.
โ
Returned from an injury.
โ
Built the strength you were chasing.
Now what?
Sometimes the answer isn't to work harder.
Sometimes it's simply to identify your next mountain.
In this week's blog, we explore why defining what progress means to you is the first step toward staying motivated for the long haul.
๐ฌ What does progress look like for you right now? Is it a measurable goal, or simply feeling healthier and more capable in everyday life? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments.
If you're a PI client and you're feeling stuck or unsure what your next goal should be, chat with one of our coaches about scheduling a client check-in. Sometimes an outside perspective is all it takes to recognize how far you've comeโand where you'd like to go next.

Gurpinder doesn't think she's unusually strong.
Why?
Because she's surrounded by other strong women at Performance Institute, so she naturally compares herself to them.
But here's what we see...
A manager at a busy family law firm.
A mom of three.
Someone who worked through a hormone-related frozen shoulder.
Someone who's shown up consistently for more than 10 years.
And today, she's rowing an impressive amount of weight with excellent technique.
When I asked her about it, she laughed and told me her adult son says she's "the strongest mom in the world."
I might have to agree.
Strength isn't about being the strongest person in the gym.
It's about becoming stronger than the version of yourself from last year.
Showing up.
Putting in the work.
Staying consistent.
That's the kind of strength that carries over into every part of life.
And Gurpinder is a great example of exactly that. ๐ช

Move fast.

Stay capable.
Caption:
Your body needs reminders that it can still move quickly.
Not every workout.
Not for everyone.
But if appropriate, small doses of speed and power training can improve athleticism, confidence, reaction time, and resilience for everyday life.
Don't just train to live longer.
Train to stay capable.

Have you been curious about HYROX but thought:
"I'm not a runner..."
"The full event sounds too intimidating..."
"Maybe next year..."
This might be your chance to experience it with a team! ๐ช
We're putting together PI HYROX Team Relay teams for the Vancouver HYROX event this December.
A team of 4 means youโll:
โ
Run just 2 x 1 km
โ
Complete 2 functional fitness stations
โ
Share the challenge with 3 other PI members
โ
Train, compete, and celebrate together
Steve and Heather had a blast competing in HYROX Doubles last year, and we think the Team Relay could be a great fit for PI members who want a fun goal to work toward without needing to complete the full individual event.

One of the eight functional fitness stations in a HYROX race is a 1,000 m row.
If you're part of a 4-person HYROX Team Relay, you don't have to complete the entire race yourself.
Instead, you'll:
โ
Run 2 x 1 km
โ
Complete 2 of the 8 functional fitness stations
โ
Cheer on your teammates as they tackle the rest!
Everyone brings different strengths to the team.
Maybe you're strong on the row...
Maybe the sled push is your thing...
Maybe you're built for the farmer's carry or wall balls.
That's part of the funโwe'll help match athletes to the events that best suit their strengths.
๐ฅ Here's Gurjeet putting in some work on one of the possible HYROX stations.

Last year, Steve and Heather completed HYROX Doubles and had an incredible experience. Since then, we've had lots of members ask if PI would ever put together HYROX teams.
The answer might be...YES!
We're exploring the idea of entering PI Team Relay teams for the Vancouver HYROX event this December.
Here's why we think the Team Relay is such a great fit:
โ
Team of 4
โ
Each person runs just 2 x 1 km
โ
Each person completes 2 functional fitness stations
โ
Train together. Race together. Cheer each other on.
If there's enough interest, Steve will create HYROX-specific programming leading up to the event, and we'll help organize the teams and registration.

Our early-release blog goes live Thursday (TODAY!), where we'll explain why we think the Team Relay is a much better fit for many PI members than the individual event.
