From our colleagues:
Study 1: Survey-based study
The SMART Lab at the University of British Columbia is conducting a survey study to better understand the mental health and masking of autistic teens with and without autistic parents. By understanding these relationships, our goal is to help inform how we support autistic adolescents and their families.

What does the study involve?
A 10-minute online survey completed by a parent.
A 15-20-minute online survey completed by an autistic adolescent/youth ages 13 to 21 years.
A 5-minute Zoom video call prior to survey completion to verify participant identities and reconfirm consent.
Who can participate?
Both a parent and autistic adolescent/youth must participate in the study.
Adolescent/Youth must 1) be 13 to 21 years old, 2) have an autism diagnosis, 3) live in Canada, the USA, England, or Australia, and 4) not have a history of intellectual disability.
Parent must live with the child a minimum of 3 days per week. Autistic and non-autistic parents can participate.
Will there be compensation?
Families will have the opportunity to enter a draw for a chance to win one of 10 $50CAD e-gift cards to thank you for your time.
What is the next step?
Please complete a 2-3-minute screener to determine if you can participate in the study by clicking on the following link: https://ubc.ca1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_4V20HTRZw8HJTfM

Study 2: Interview-based study
The SMART Lab at the University of British Columbia is conducting an interview study to better understand autistic adolescents’ experiences living with an autistic parent. Our goal is to better understand their perspectives and the dynamics of families with a shared autistic identity.

What does the study involve?
An online Zoom interview between the adolescent/youth and the researcher (45-60 minutes). Questions will explore topics like autistic identity, daily life, and interactions with their parents. Accommodations for the interview are available.
A 5-minute demographic questionnaire will also be completed prior to the interview by the parent.
Who Can Participate?
Both an autistic parent and adolescent/youth must participate in the study.
The adolescent/youth must be 13 to 21 years old with a formal autism diagnosis living in Canada and must be aware of their own and their parent’s autistic identity.
The parent must identify as autistic or have a formal autism diagnosis.
Will there be compensation?
Participating families will receive a $25CAD e-gift card of their choice.
What is the next step?
Please complete a 2-3-minute screener to determine if you can participate in the study by clicking on the following link: https://ubc.ca1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_08SmUtkS5XlvF6S

We are recruiting participants for a study on sound sensitivity. We are seeking Autistic and non-Autistic participants ages 12 years or older who have current decreased sound tolerance (a reduced tolerance to everyday sounds) and who do not have a hearing impairment.

Participation involves completing online questionnaires and coming into the lab at SFU Burnaby to test out a new sound management mobile app we are developing. For youth participants (ages 12-18), we ask that a caregiver also completes questionnaires. For more information, please email us at [email protected].
