Here is the most perfect example of keeping your garden hospitable for beneficial insects. This daylily had finished blooming for the season and we wanted to make sure more energy was invested in its roots and growth for next season - so the flower stalk was cut back before seed pods could develop - BUT we left a good 6" of the stalk as a home for beneficial garden bugs to move in. This grass spider has nestled nicely into its new home, happily spinning it's funnel web among the garden bed - helping to keep destructive insect populations in check. You don't need pesticides and sprays in many cases - you just need to make the right environment to invite the right bugs to your garden.
Cheers little guy!

Nature has been around waaaaay longer than we've been creating gardens, and managing just fine, thank you very much.
There are many reasons not to "clean up" the garden in the fall; leaving food sources for birds and wildlife, creating winter homes for beneficial insects, allowing for organic material to break down nature and feed the soil - and many more.
However, many of our gardens are manufactured landscapes, with plants that are not native to our regions and need a little more care going into the winter.
Not sure what your garden needs? Ask below - we can help.
