We live in a time when technology can create remarkably polished images in seconds. Lines can be perfectly straight. Buildings can appear flawless. Shadows can fall exactly where they are expected to fall.

And yet, when I sit down with a pencil and begin to draw, I am reminded of something very important:

Art does not have to be perfect to have value.

Sometimes, it is the imperfection that tells you a human being was there.

A Drawing Is More Than a Collection of Lines

When an artist draws something by hand, we don't simply reproduce what is in front of us.

We interpret it.

Two artists can stand in exactly the same place, looking at exactly the same building, landscape or street, and create completely different drawings.

One might notice the architecture.

Another might be fascinated by an old doorway.

Someone else might focus on the trees, the people walking past, or the way a little café makes the street feel welcoming.

That is human perception.

We don't only draw what we see. We draw what we notice.

And what we notice is influenced by our memories, personalities, experiences and emotions.

That is why every artist's work has its own voice.

The Little Imperfections Are Part of the Artist

My illustrations are drawn by hand.

That means my lines are not always mathematically perfect.

A window may not be absolutely identical to the one beside it. A curve might have a tiny variation. A tree might lean slightly differently from the photograph that inspired me.

And I have come to appreciate those things rather than trying to eliminate them.

Because they are evidence of the hand behind the drawing.

There was a person sitting there, looking, thinking, deciding, erasing, redrawing and eventually saying:

Yes. That feels right.

Technology can help us do wonderful things, and I believe there is room for both technology and traditional art in our world.

But human art carries something different.

It carries the artist's decisions.

Even in Black and White, There Is Personality

The illustrations in my You-Color books are intentionally black and white.

At first glance, someone might think that makes them simpler than a finished painting or a full-colour illustration.

I see them differently.

Black-and-white line art leaves room for another person to enter the artwork.

The artist begins the story. The person coloring it continues it.

I decide which lines to draw, which architectural details to emphasize, how much of the landscape to include and what feeling I want the illustration to have.

Then I stop.

The rest belongs to you.

You choose whether the sky is pale blue, brilliant orange or completely imaginary.

You decide what colour the flowers should be.

You choose the mood.

And suddenly one hand-drawn illustration can become hundreds of completely different pieces of art.

I love that.

A Coloring Book Can Still Be Art

Sometimes the words coloring book make people think of something disposable or primarily made for children.

But a coloring book can be much more than that.

It can preserve architecture.

It can introduce someone to history.

It can capture the feeling of a neighbourhood, a city or a country.

It can encourage someone to slow down long enough to notice details they might otherwise walk past.

And it can create a connection between the person who drew the page and the person who colours it.

My books are not about creating perfect pictures.

They are about discovery, creativity and connection.

Human Art Has a Fingerprint

Every artist develops a visual language over time.

It isn't necessarily something we consciously create.

It simply happens.

The way we draw trees.

The amount of detail we put into buildings.

The expressions we give people.

The things we exaggerate.

The things we simplify.

Even the things we accidentally make a little crooked.

Those choices become almost like a fingerprint.

That is something I hope we continue to value as technology becomes more capable of producing beautiful imagery.

Not because technology is the enemy of art.

But because human creativity deserves to remain visible.

Perfect Isn't Always More Beautiful

There is a wonderful warmth in knowing that something was made by another person's hands.

You can sometimes see where the pencil hesitated.

Where a line was corrected.

Where the artist interpreted something rather than reproducing it perfectly.

Those small differences aren't necessarily flaws.

They are traces of the creative process.

And perhaps that is one of the reasons handmade things continue to mean so much to us.

They remind us that someone spent time creating them.

From My Hand to Yours

When I draw an illustration for You-Color, I know that my drawing isn't really finished when I put my pencil down.

Eventually, that page may find its way into someone else's hands.

A child might colour it.

A traveller might colour it after returning home from a trip.

Someone might work on it quietly with a cup of coffee on a Sunday morning.

And each person will see my drawing a little differently.

They will add their own colours, memories and imagination.

That means the final artwork belongs to both of us.

I created the lines.
You create what happens between them.

And to me, that is one of the most beautiful things about human art.
