💭 The first words you say after they lose a match matter more than you think. 🥋
They are already drowning in bad thoughts. They know they messed up.
They know they should have pulled the trigger faster. They know they could have done better.
That first look they give back to their parents or coaches is not just looking for support. It is also that feeling of: “Man… did I disappoint them?”
The handshake to the opponent and the opponents coach. The dreaded walk back. The look of disappointment on their face.
The first thing they are thinking is usually: “What is coach gonna say? What are my parents going to say?”
That is why our first words matter so much.
If we only focus on the negatives, they stay stuck in the negatives.
As coaches, our job is to see the bigger picture.
Bring them back to the center. Remind them what they did well. Correct what needs work.
But most importantly: Give them belief. Give them direction.
Not just for the next match, but for their future.
It does not need to be a 20-minute lecture either nor does it need to be a yelling match. You don’t need to break them down more.
The words need to be simple enough for them to understand and strong enough for them to walk away thinking:
“Okay, I messed up… but I am getting better. I can do better.” 📈
In my opinion, the most important coaching after a loss is helping them deal with the match happening in their mind after the match is already over. 🧠

Stretch.
Do it for 8–12 weeks before you start complaining that “nothing works.”
Most people don’t need fancy. They need a plan they can actually follow. 💪🔥
