Two scrap dealers lynched at Ntensere over alleged child theft

Two scrap dealers have been lynched at Ntensere in the Atwima Nwabiagya North District following allegations of child theft, an incident local authorities say underscores the growing danger of mob justice in parts of the Ashanti Region.

The Unit Committee Vice Chairperson for the area, Saramatu Zackaria, confirmed the incident, describing how the victims were killed before she arrived at the scene.

“I was attending a wedding ceremony when I received information about a mob action in my electoral area. I rushed to the scene, but before I arrived, the victims had already been killed, leaving their lifeless bodies behind,” she told Adom News.

According to reports, the two men, identified as Alhasan and Nagolo, had gone to the community to buy scrap materials when residents accused them of attempting to steal a three-year-old child. The suspicion quickly escalated into violence, with the pair reportedly beaten to death. Their motorcycle was also set ablaze.

First batch of Ghana Armed Forces recruits to begin training

The Ghana Armed Forces has announced the completion of the selection process for the first batch of recruits, with a total of 2,000 individuals set to commence training as part of a broader nationwide enlistment exercise.

According to a statement issued by Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin, the selected recruits are expected to report to their respective regional selection centres across all 16 regions on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, at 9am to collect their appointment letters and prospectus.

The Armed Forces noted that this initial group forms part of four batches to be trained.

It also assured applicants who were deferred due to treatable medical conditions during the screening process to seek appropriate care, indicating they would be reconsidered at a later stage at no additional cost.

The statement further revealed that the first batch includes 18 individuals who sustained injuries during the El-Wak Stadium stampede last year, as well as five others sponsored by families of victims of the incident, in recognition of the tragedy.

NPP and NDC figures named in galamsey scandal – TUC calls for license revocations

Deputy General Secretary of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Dr Kwabena Nyarko Otoo, has called for the immediate revocation of mining licenses held by politically exposed individuals involved in galamsey operations.

Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express on October 13, Dr Otoo revealed that some politically connected figures from both the governing and opposition parties are deeply involved in illegal mining, also known as galamsey, and are profiting from the destruction of Ghana’s water bodies and forests.

He cited specific cases uncovered during a TUC fact-finding mission to assess the impact of galamsey on water treatment plants in parts of the Central and Eastern Regions.

“In Anum Apapam, we were told, somebody called Robert Lamptey, who has a license for small-scale mining in Anum Apapam and its environs, where he has a concession.

"What he does is that if I want to mine and acquire a land, I go and see him, and he covers me with his license, and I pay money to him. I pay about GH¢70,000 to him. And then every week, whatever I make from that galamsey activity, I give him about 30% of it,” Dr Otoo disclosed.

According to him, the problem extends beyond partisan lines, as politicians from both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have been implicated in the illicit mining trade.
