Massage Rescue
I am a Massage Therapist working out of Beaverlodge Alberta who offers deep tissue, Rapid Neurofascial reset, cupping as well as Physio taping
A little massage therapy intake-form education
Recently, I’ve been seeing answers like:
“N/A”
“None that are affected by massage”
Or leaving the section blank
…under the question asking clients to list their current medications.
And this tells me there may be a misunderstanding about why massage therapists ask this question in the first place.
When your intake form asks you to list medications, please list the medications you are actually taking, including any supplements (or you can bring a list of your medications to be added to your file if you can’t remember them all).
You don’t need to decide whether you think they’re relevant to massage. That’s something your massage therapist can evaluate with you.
Medication use doesn’t automatically mean you can’t receive massage. Not at all. But certain medications can change how we safely approach your session. Depending on the medication and your individual circumstances, we may need to consider things like:
• bruising or bleeding risk
• blood pressure or dizziness
• sedation or alertness
• altered pain perception or sensation
• skin or tissue fragility
• inflammation or healing
• how much pressure may be appropriate
• whether a technique should be modified or avoided
• whether additional medical clearance may be appropriate
Sometimes the answer is simply, “Thanks for letting me know,” and your massage proceeds exactly as planned. Other times, that little piece of information changes how I work with you.
That’s why the question isn’t:
“Are you taking any medications that YOU think affect massage?”
It’s:
“Please list any medications you are currently taking.”
You don’t have to know what matters clinically. That’s my job. Your intake form isn’t busywork. It’s one of the tools I use to help make your session as safe, appropriate, and individualized as possible.
And please don’t worry about being judged for what you take. Medication information is health information, not a morality test. I just need accurate information so I can make informed decisions about your care.
✨ When in doubt, disclose it and let your therapist decide whether it’s relevant. Education creates safer massage for everyone and good communication between the massage therapist and client ensures a great session especially for you the client.
