24 students from Barrie Karate attended the Windsor Open Championships on June 13th, many for the first time at a Karate tournament.
I'm very proud of each of them as they represented our dojo with courage and respect.
Thank you Conroy Copeland and your team of volunteers for continuing this annual tradition for almost 40 years.

“How many times per week should my child train?”
This is one of the biggest questions parents ask after deciding karate might be a good fit.
The answer?
👉 2 times per week is usually perfect
Why?
Because that’s where kids:
✔ Build confidence
✔ Remember what they learn
✔ Start seeing real progress
Once a week feels slow.
Three times can feel like a lot.
Two times?
That’s the sweet spot.
We broke it down for parents here 👇

💬 I’m curious…
How busy is your child’s weekly schedule right now?

“What age should my child start karate?”
It’s one of the most common questions we get from parents in Barrie.
The short answer?
👉 Most kids can start around age 4.
But the real answer is…
It’s not about age.
It’s about readiness.
Can they follow instructions?
Can they participate in a group?
Can they stay engaged?
When those pieces are in place, something powerful happens:
Confidence starts to grow.
We put together a simple guide to help parents understand what to expect at every age 👇

💬 I’m curious…
How old is your child right now?

If your child has a LOT of energy…
You already know.
They’re always moving.
They struggle to sit still.
Focus comes and goes.
And you’ve probably wondered:
“Is there something that could actually help them channel this in a positive way?”
Here’s what we’ve seen with many families in Barrie:
It’s not about having less energy…
It’s about having the right environment.
Karate gives kids:
✔ Structure
✔ Movement
✔ Clear expectations
✔ Confidence through progress
And something powerful happens…
They don’t just burn energy.
They learn how to control it.
We wrote a guide for parents who are dealing with this right now 👇

💬 Quick question:
Would you describe your child as high-energy?

“What’s the BEST after-school activity for my child?”
There are so many options…
⚽ Sports
🎵 Music
💃 Dance
🎨 Art
🥋 Martial Arts
But here’s what most parents really want:
✔ Something their child actually enjoys
✔ Something that builds confidence
✔ Something they won’t quit after a few weeks
That’s where the right environment makes all the difference.
We created a simple guide to help you compare the most popular after-school activities in Barrie—and choose what’s best for your child.

Kids don’t quit because they’re lazy.
They quit when they feel left out.
No progress.
No recognition.
No confidence.
👉 Kids don’t stay where they don’t feel successful.
That’s why structure matters.

Most parents don’t realize this…
It’s not that kids don’t want to listen.
It’s that they haven’t been taught how to focus yet.
And that’s exactly where everything changes.
At Barrie Karate, we see it all the time…
👉 The shy child who won’t make eye contact
👉 The child who gets frustrated easily
👉 The one who struggles to stick with things
Then something clicks.
Confidence starts to build.
Focus improves.
They begin to carry themselves differently—at home, at school, everywhere.
This isn’t just about learning to punch and kick.
It’s about helping your child become the best version of themselves.

“I don’t want to go anymore…”
It usually happens around week 2 or 3.
At first, they’re excited.
New activity. New gear. New energy.
Then suddenly…
They don’t feel like going.
They say they’re tired.
They lose interest.
And as a parent, you’re left wondering:
“Why does my child quit everything?”
Here’s the truth most people don’t talk about:
It’s usually not your child.
Kids don’t quit because they’re lazy.
They quit when:
They don’t feel like they’re improving
They feel behind or overwhelmed
No one notices their effort
The environment doesn’t keep them engaged
Confidence drops…
And quitting feels easier.
We see this ALL the time with families in Barrie.
And we’ve also seen what happens when the environment changes.
When kids:
✔ See clear progress
✔ Get recognized for effort
✔ Feel successful in class
Something shifts.
They stop wanting to quit.
They start looking forward to it.
That’s the difference.

There’s a moment every parent feels…
When your child starts to shrink a little.
They don’t speak up as much.
They avoid eye contact.
They hesitate instead of stepping forward.
And you wonder…
“Did something happen?”
Sometimes, it’s bullying.
Sometimes, it’s just a lack of confidence.
But either way, it hurts to watch.
Here’s what most people get wrong:
Karate isn’t about teaching kids to fight.
It’s about making sure they don’t have to.
Because when a child learns to stand tall…
Look someone in the eye…
Speak clearly and confidently…
Everything changes.
They carry themselves differently.
They respond differently.
And the world starts to treat them differently too.
We see it all the time.
A quiet child walks into their first class unsure…
And a few weeks later, they stand proud, strong, and confident.
That’s the real power of karate.
Not fighting.
Confidence.
