At the beginning of 2021, Joanne Lougheed and Ian McIntosh decided to help business owners and people from other organizations build the knowledge, skills, confidence and experience they need to create great quality videos. Together, they have created hands-on, interactive workshops and courses that guide participants through the steps to Start Making Videos that engage their target audience.
In our Start Making Videos Hands-On Workshop, Ian McIntosh and Joanne Lougheed will help you create your own great quality videos using your smartphone or video camera and a few inexpensive accessories.
Video is the best way to tell your story! They'll guide you through the simple steps of making great quality videos that you can share on social media, your website, and other digital platforms.
In this fun and interactive workshop, they'll walk you step by step through the basics of making videos. You’ll record and edit a video using just your smartphone or any camera that you have.

Here are some great tips to help you get started making videos that you can share on your social media, website, blog and other digital platforms.
1/ Tell a story: Great stories have a Hero, who has a problem, a Guide who helps the Hero find a solution, and a happy conclusion of course!
2/ Write a script: Even if you don’t follow it word for word, your message will be clear, you’ll “um” and “ah” less, and you’ll feel more confident.
3/ Use your smartphone: Smartphones made in the last 2-3 years have great video cameras, so , although DSLRs and mirrorless cameras have some true advantages, they are not necessary to make great videos.
4/ Put the camera at eye level and on something stable: Tripods work well, but you can also prop your camera against something on a table, shelf, or the hood of a car… whatever works!
5/Clear the clutter: Find a place to shoot without distractions, people, or stuff in the background. Try to have everything seen on camera be part of the story or represent your brand. “Less is More”.
6/ Even out the light: Position yourself on camera so there’s close to the same amount of light shining on both sides of your face. You can use table and floor lamps as light sources, and a white sheet or big piece of paper can be used to reflect natural light.
7/ Get a good mic: While smartphone cameras are great, their microphones typically are not! A good external mic doesn’t have to be expensive and you’ll get much better sound.
8/ Record more than one video at a time: The planning and set-up that goes into making videos is worth it, and you can capitalize on your efforts by making several videos once you’re ready to shoot.
9/ Give yourself permission to suck: No one is great in the beginning and mistakes are an important part of the learning process. Have a growth mindset and be kind to yourself.
10/The MOST important thing… Just do it! You don’t need to know everything or have a lot of fancy video gear to get started. The best way to learn to make great videos is to practice, practice, and practice some more. It will get easier and you’ll feel more confident every time!
