‘Ball of your foot’

Shifting your body weight forward, lifting your heels, having the connection of the athletes body and the ground be through their “balls of their feet.”

But what is it?

The padded portion of the sole between the toes and the arch, the metatarsophalangeal joints (MTP joints). Studies show that ‘Heel Up’ body movement stabilizes ankles and knees at the sacrifice of energy conservation.

Strengthening the intrinsic muscle systems surrounding the MTP joints has important implications including the improvement in stability of shock absorption. Athletes can become fatigued over prolonged use, so it is best to train in game like situations.

These small joints and muscles can often be overlooked, but play a key part in performance of a scrummager.

Direction of Pressure:

To generalize direction of an individuals pressure and generated force you need to look a few Key Indicators leading up.

Here we have two athletes with a top down view. Are their Hips, Shoulders, and Ears all parallel to each other?

If transferring pressure through each Indicator, will the force created be in the direction they want?
