In this edition of Barriston Briefs, Jacklyn Tuckey and Josh Valler outline key timelines to be aware of when registering a lien.
Timelines are crucial when dealing with construction liens. You have 60 days to file a lien from the date your work on the project is completed, terminated, or abandoned—whichever comes first. If the project began before June 2018, you have only 45 days to register the lien.

Myth: "If my married partner and I divorce, everything we own gets divided exactly 50/50."
Reality: Ontario family law does not split physical assets down the middle. Instead, the law calculates the value of the property you accumulated during the marriage, a process called the equalization of net family property. You keep your own assets, but the spouse who grew their net worth more during the marriage pays the other spouse half the difference.
