đ Back-to-School Feet Check!
New school year. New shoes. Same busy little feet! đ
Before your kids head back to the classroom, sports, recess and all the running around that comes with it, make sure their shoes are properly fitted and supporting their growing feet.
A few things to check:
âď¸ Enough room for toes to move
âď¸ Secure fit around the heel
âď¸ Comfortable and supportive
âď¸ Appropriate for their daily activities
âď¸ No worn-out soles or compressed cushioning
And remember â kids don't always complain when their shoes don't fit. Regular foot and shoe checks can help catch problems before they become painful.
If your child is experiencing foot, ankle, knee or leg discomfort, frequent tripping, unusual wear on their shoes, or fatigue with walking and running, a biomechanical assessment may be helpful.
Happy back-to-school! đđ Let's keep those little feet moving comfortably all year long.

As a Pedorthist, one of my favourite parts of my job isn't just making custom orthoticsâit's seeing what happens after.
It's hearing someone say they walked their dog without pain for the first time in months.
It's watching a runner get back to training after an injury.
It's helping someone get through a long workday without counting down the hours because their feet hurt.
Every pair of custom orthotics I make is designed for one person, one body, and one lifestyle. There isn't a one-size-fits-all solution because there isn't a one-size-fits-all person.
Whether you're dealing with heel pain, sore knees, tired feet after work, or simply want to move more comfortably, my goal is to help you get back to doing the things you love.
If you've been putting up with foot pain because you think it's "normal," I'd love to help you find out what's really going on.

Long shifts shouldnât leave you limping home. đ
If you work in hospitality, retail, healthcare, or any job where youâre on your feet all day, a gait analysis can help identify movement patterns that may be contributing to:
â¨â˘ Heel painâ¨â˘ Arch fatigueâ¨â˘ Knee discomfortâ¨â˘ Lower back painâ¨â˘ Foot soreness after shifts
Understanding how you walk is often the first step toward lasting relief.

1. Footwear fit matters more than brand
A proper hiking shoe or boot should:
⢠Have a snug heel lock (no lift)
⢠Allow forefoot splay (toes should not feel compressed on descents)
⢠Fit with your hiking socks on (not thin everyday socks)
⢠Leave about a thumbâs width in front of the longest toe
Most hiking discomfort comes from subtle sizing errors that only show up after 5â10 km.
2. Custom orthotics can change everything on uneven terrain
For hikers, orthotics arenât just for âsupportââthey:
⢠Reduce fatigue from stabilizing on uneven ground
⢠Improve rearfoot control on side slopes
⢠Help offload hot spots like metatarsalgia, plantar fasciitis, or Mortonâs neuroma
⢠Improve shock distribution on long descents
3. Manage downhill stress (the silent problem)
Most foot issues on hikes happen on descents due to:
⢠Toe jamming â bruised nails
⢠Forefoot overload â burning pain
⢠Shear forces â blisters
Solutions:
⢠Use a heel-lock lacing technique
⢠Slightly shorten stride on descents
⢠Consider a stiffer midsole or rock plate
4. Blister prevention is friction + moisture control
Best evidence-based approach:
⢠Moisture-wicking merino or synthetic socks (avoid cotton)
⢠Thin liner sock only if needed for high-friction feet
⢠Pre-emptive taping for known hot spots (Leukotape P is common in practice)
⢠Keep nails trimmed straight to reduce distal pressure
5. Watch for âfoot collapse fatigueâ
Even people with no symptoms often develop:
⢠Increased pronation as fatigue sets in
⢠Arch strain after long distance
⢠Forefoot spreading in heat/swelling
A supportive orthotic + stable midsole helps prevent late-hike breakdown in mechanics.
6. Terrain-specific advice (important in Alberta-type trails)
For variable terrain (roots, gravel, rock):
⢠Prioritize lateral stability over cushioning alone
⢠Avoid overly soft shoesâthey increase instability on uneven ground
⢠Look for a moderate-stiff sole for protection without losing ground feel
7. Break-in is non-negotiable
New boots should be:
⢠Worn indoors first
⢠Then on short walks with elevation
⢠Fully tested before long hikes
Never âtestâ new footwear on a long trail.
