Mechanical Wiring: The art of making completely separate, independent systems operate as one to achieve a desired sequence of operation.

This system consists of a Honeywell gas detection system, an exhaust fan, and a make-up air unit.

Sequence:

When the gas detection system detects a certain level of CO2 or NO2 it initiates a Level one alarm. When it initiates a level one alarm it starts a timer. When the desired time expires, the gas detection controller closes a contact which controls the "Auto" control circuit on the exhaust fan starter.
This provides 24v to the exhaust fan starter coil, which then closes the exhaust fan contactor, starting the exhaust fan. When the starter contactor closes, it simultaneously closes two separate sets of contacts. 1 set of contacts initiates a command to the motorized damper to open and allows the fan to exhaust air from the building. 1 set initiates the "run" circuit on the MUA, allowing the MUA to provide fresh air into the building.
The system runs until the desired air quality level is reached. When the desired level is reached, the gas detection controller opens the set of contacts in the controller, which reverses the sequence and shuts everything down.

The interlocking of this system is important to balance proper positive and negative air pressure within the building. You can't exhaust too much air from a building without providing adequate fresh air supply. You also can't pump too much air into a building without allowing some to escape.

The gas detection system consists of 2 idependant Honeywell controllers with CO2 cartridges installed and 2 remote NO2 sensors. These systems are wired in parallel with the starters "Auto" circuit. Allowing either systems to initiate the command.

This was a unique spot to work as it was directly across from the end of one of the Pearson Airport runways. This meant everything above 48ft was monitored air space and provided another challenge for the hoisting of the MUA. Planes coming and going just a stones throw above your head all day long.

Be sure to hire a fully licensed electrical contractor. If they are not registered with the ESA, they are not a licensed contractor.

Did you know that unlicensed electrical work has 4x more safety issues than work done by Licensed Electrical Contractors?
