Key Requirements to Sell Food from Home
Even for low-risk foods, you’ll need to meet these conditions:
Get a Permit: Contact your regional health authority (e.g., Vancouver Coastal Health, Northern Health) to apply for a food service permit. They’ll inspect your kitchen and review your plans.
Kitchen Standards: Your kitchen must be clean, pest-free, and equipped for safe food prep. Some authorities might require upgrades like a separate handwashing sink.
FOODSAFE Training: While not always required by law, a FOODSAFE Level 1 certificate is often recommended (or requested) to prove you know safe food handling practices.
Local Bylaws: Check your municipality’s zoning rules and business licensing requirements—some areas restrict home-based food sales.

New Front-of-Package (FOP) labeling regulations in Canada and proposed rules in the U.S. are pushing food manufacturers to make crucial decisions. By 2026, many products will need to display warning symbols for high levels of saturated fat, sodium, or added sugars. This affects even products marketed as healthy, including plant-based and organic options. Companies must choose between adding FOP labels or reformulating to avoid them. This challenge presents an opportunity to innovate by reducing nutrients of concern while maintaining product quality and appeal. Manufacturers who successfully balance nutrition, taste, and affordability could gain a competitive edge in an increasingly health-conscious market. The food industry must now prioritize transparency and nutritional improvement to meet both regulatory requirements and evolving consumer expectations.
