GREAT GANNET RECOVERY
These are a species that suffered badly during bird flu, in our local population, so it is heartening to see them back in good numbers this year, and early signs of recovering stocks have certainly helped with and still evident in recent days. It just shows that to does work in and in recovering . We have had a few moments this year that have felt like being in a film.
SOME FACTS about these awesome birds.
👀 They have spectacular, startlingly blue eyes, though some birds have a white eye, attributed to blindness caused during bird flu.
📏They have an impressive wingspan of 160cm wide.
🔽 Dive from a great height hitting the water at speeds upwards of 60mph.
💧 They have evolved to have their nostrils concealed inside their beaks to prevent drowning while diving at great speed.
🌊 Have natural air sacs in their head, neck, and chest that function like airbags, cushioning the extreme impact when they dive head-first into the water at high speeds to catch fish. (thought to be the inspiration for vehicle air bags).
Thank you to Reading BSAC for the diving gannets image.

A much needed conversation, see below.

🤔 How do we protect whales and dolphins in Marine Protected Areas?
