To all our friends, it grieves me deeply to tell you that my husband, Kevin, was brutally and senselessly taken from us on Monday, 13 June. The Farm Inn will be closed indefinitely.

It's taken a while to bring myself to write this story of a dog's life, and it's a long one. Digby crossed the rainbow bridge on February 5. It was quite sudden, although we knew that she wasn't going to be with us much longer, but fortunately she did not suffer and we did not have to take the hard decision to end her life. She did it her way - quietly and with dignity.
Digby joined our family around March 2010 a plump, strong RottweilerXMastiff puppy. She loved being cuddled. Her first year and a half she lived with us in Placencia, but clearly loved the time spent at the farm. In Placencia she had her best friend, Jazz, our granddaughter who came to Placencia in May of that year. But the pull of the farm was enormous and after one weekend visit she simply refused to get in the car for the return drive. It's not easy lifting a 100lb+ dog into a car, especially when the dog is not willing. She stayed behind with our builder, Max, and his family who were living at the farm at the time.
She found out that at the farm she was not going to have the children's undivided attention. Mayan families all work together at various chores, and so our bored pup taught herself the game of catch-the-cohune-nut. She'd pick up a nut, toss it in the air and catch it. Cohune nuts became her obsession, one that would last all her life and incidentally cause some serious damage to other dogs who tried to steal her nuts away from her.
When my sister Petro and her husband Pieter arrived at the farm to open and run the guest house, Digby was introduced to other dogs and also some of the domestic poultry which were hand-reared by this animal loving team. One of these, a guinea fowl named Pip, became Digby's shadow, always following her closely on walks and sleeping next to the guardian dog. Digby was quite happy to allow Pip to harvest any ticks collected during the walks from her pelt.
One of her earliest experiences at the farm was with a wandering skunk. Not knowing what she was letting herself in for, Digby gave chase one dark night and suffered the consequences. So did Petro and Pieter. They woke to an ungodly smell, and not yet knowing their surrounds as well as they do now, thought perhaps it was a propane gas leak. Worried that an open flame might blow them all up, they crept around the house trying to determine the source of the smell in the dark. Eventually they found a very contrite Digby trying to hide from herself on the veranda. Despite multiple washes and even applying bottles of ketchup, the smell took about 3 weeks to finally dissipate. They all learned from that, Digby in particular. Every time a skunk wondered into the yard after that, or there was even a whiff of skunk, she hid her face in her paws. It took the German Shepherds who joined the ranks of guard dogs several strikes to learn the same lesson - perhaps Digby was laughing in her paws at their plight.
She had two pet peeves: one was any birds of prey and the other was any opossum that dared enter her domain. Soaring vultures could not soar anywhere near Digby's yard - she would tear out into the open and bark them away. Sometimes she would be deeply asleep on the covered veranda and yet sense their presence - perhaps the constantly chattering guinea fowl told her about the vultures; perhaps she just had a sixth sense about them.
As for possums, they signed their own death certificate if they came anywhere within reach of Digby. She slept in the kitchen area at night, lying in wait for the slightest noise that gave away their presence and then they did not need to play dead - she saw to it that they were in fact deceased. Digby would bulldoze down doors to get at these intruders.
A walk along the trails at The Farm Inn takes you along three different creeks. Although her parentage made Digby a hound, she was at heart a water dog. We would walk the trails while Digby walked and swam in the creeks as far as she could go, yipping continuously in an effort to get the humans to throw something for her to chase or catch. Fortunately there are many cohune nuts on the property. If her yips were ignored she would stick her head under water and dig up a rock - usually quite a large one - which she would carry with her. She taught our senior German Shepherd, Peck, to do this as well. Our trails are littered with rocks carried out of the creeks by these two aspiring builders.
Digby was really head of security. She seemed to have more acute hearing than the other dogs; she would always be the first to bark the alert that a car had turned into our driveway. In her later years she would remain at the house barking orders for the others to go and investigate.
Despite having a really bad leg - her left back knee lost its cartilage when she was around 6 years old - and in the last year a tumor slowly formed on that leg, she was always ready to go for a walk. I will always cherish the last walk I took with her. The tumor had suddenly started enlarging rapidly and we knew she was not going to be around much longer. We walked across the Cascades creek and up Stonehill. She slipped on the way down to the creek crossing and was reluctant to cross back over, so I had to help her up the steps but she made it, still with the goofy grin on her face that said she was happy and content with her life.
She has left a huge gaping hole in our hearts. She was the best dog - just like every dog is the best dog. She was definitely one of a kind.

Sunset at The Farm Inn - don't you wish you were here?

Wish I could share the heavenly smell of the dracenas all around the inn and our house. I was sitting inside working on something, when the perfume invaded my senses. Almost at once a mottled owl started calling in the trees around the swimming pool, teasing me out to see the gorgeous almost full moon, twinkling stars and their echoes, hundreds of fireflies lighting up the lawn. It's a stunning evening here at The Farm Inn.
