MAWS
Protecting Botswana's wildlife through domestic animal care. Something to celebrate.
Since MAWS opened its clinic doors, we have sterilised and vaccinated over 20,000 dogs. We have now got UK Charity status and a Justgiving site all ready for any donations. Our Vet and vet nurse volunteers either contact us via [email protected] or through WVS who have supported us through thick and thin. Our outreach clinics are always very busy and exciting to get into areas where there is no veterinary help of any form within hundreds of miles.

MOHEMBO AREA OUTREACH
From 25โ29 March, MAWS conducted an outreach in the northern Delta panhandle, visiting the villages of Xhaoga, Gowa, Xhakao, Mohembo East, and Samochima.
Services included sterilisation, vaccination, and parasite treatment for dogs and cats, as well as parasite control, wound care, hoof trimming, and harness checks for donkeys and horses, supported by SPANA.
A total of 368 animals were assisted:
151 dogs, 7 cats, 125 donkeys, and 85 horses.
MAWS extends sincere thanks to:
Krokovango Crocodile Farm for accommodation, and to Mr Boshoff and Annelise Langman, owners of the farm.
Ansie Gildenhuys for once again facilitating the outreach, including acting as liaison and coordinator.
Marna Dames for providing the most delicious hot meals for the team each evening.
Lance Gildenhuys and Lloyd Wilmot for assistance with emergency vehicle repairs.
We couldn't do it without the generous support of the communities we visit!

๐๐พ Happy Earth Day from MAWS ๐พ๐
Every day, we see how deeply animals are affected by the world around them โ the condition of the places they live, the availability of water, the kindness (or neglect) of the people they depend on.
Earth Day is not just about the planet in a broad sense. Itโs about the dog searching for shade, the donkey carrying heavy loads, the cat finding a safe place to rest. Their lives are shaped by the environment we create.
When we protect our earth, we protect them. When we choose compassion, responsibility, and care, we give animals a chance at safer, healthier lives.
This work can be heavy, and the challenges are real โ but change begins in the small, everyday choices we make.
Letโs keep showing up. For them. Always. ๐

๐พ Inspiring the Next Generation ๐พ
MAWS had the privilege of visiting the junior primary students at Matshwane International School, where we spoke about responsible pet ownership and the importance of caring for animals.
These early lessons matter. By teaching compassion, empathy, and kindness, we are helping shape a generation that understands the responsibility that comes with caring for animals. ๐ถ๐ฑ
We hope these young learners will grow into strong advocates and voices for those who cannot speak for themselves.
Some STUDENTS even brought donations of food for the animals in our care - THANK YOU!
A sincere thank you to Matshwane International School for welcoming us so warmly โ we truly enjoyed sharing this special experience with your students. ๐

There is a growing crisis our country โ child abuse and gender-based violence are at an all-time high.
R**e: ~4โ6 cases per day (reported)
Women killed: ~1 every few days
Child abuse cases: multiple cases reported daily
What many donโt realise is that violence rarely begins with people. It often starts with animals.
When compassion is absent in how we treat the most vulnerable โ the voiceless, the innocent โ it does not stop there. A person who can harm an animal without remorse is far more likely to harm another human.
This is why the work we do at MAWS goes beyond animal welfare.
It is about building a more compassionate society. It is about teaching our youth empathy, responsibility, and respect for life โ starting with animals.
Because when we raise children to be kind to animals, we raise adults who are less likely to harm each other.
Compassion is learned.
We must do better.

If your animal is caught and destroyed during the culling campaign, the responsibility lies with you!
They donโt know the rules โ you do!
Keep your animals contained. Be part of the solution, not the problem.

Teach a child to be kind to animals, and you teach them to be kind to people.
Botswana is facing a serious rise in child abuse and gender-based violence.
These issues donโt exist in isolation โ they are often rooted in a lack of empathy and compassion.
Cruelty is learned. And so is kindness.
When a child is allowed to harm an animal without consequence, it sends a dangerous message โ that causing pain is acceptable.
But when we teach them to protect, to care, and to respect even the smallest, most vulnerable lives, we are shaping a different future.
Animal welfare is not separate from human welfare. It is the foundation of it.
If we want safer communities, we must start where compassion begins โ with how we treat animals.
Because kindness should never be optional.
