🎬 Celebrating the Guardians of Memory

This , the NFVF recognises the vital role that archives play in the art of storytelling—especially in documentary filmmaking. Archiving plays an important role in the film space, especially for documentary filmmakers. The NFVF is invested in ensuring that we archive and digitise reels, films, and maps.

The NFVF, through PESP4, has been working on a digitisation project in partnership with NARSSA. Through this project, 6000 (120 jobs created) newsreel films were digitised at the NARSSA offices in Pretoria. Last year, as part of PESP5, another round of digitisation was started with a target of digitising 1000 (140 jobs created) maps. That work is ongoing and should be completed in June 2025.

This is mind-blowing: on Tuesday it was International #HumanRightsDay, and the new President of Botswana, Duma Boko, attended the burial of an Indigenous Bushman man, Pitseng Gaoberekwe, in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, the Bushmen’s ancestral land. The previous Botswana government had banned Pitseng’s burial from happening in the reserve, so Pitseng hadn’t had a funeral since his death in 2021. In fact, the Bushmen won a court ruling in 2006 for the right to live and hunt on their land, supported by a big campaign by Survival, and Boko was one of the lawyers working on the case. Previous governments had tried to force the Bushmen off their lands for decades, and the ban on Pitseng’s burial in the reserve was part of their persecution. This is a huge moment of hope that the Bushmen’s full rights will finally be recognized and respected. ✊ Rest in power, Pitseng.

As we celebrate and reflect on Human Rights Day 2024, we stand in solidarity with the Pitseng family on the horrors they have experienced in the past 3 years. Seeing this day in action in Botswana was a humbling experience, and bring to mind the quote by James Baldwin;

'We can disagree and still love each other unless your disagreement is rooted in my oppression and denial of my humanity and right to exist'.
