Botswana Development Corporation (BDC) today officially launched the groundbreaking ceremony for the ambitious New Botswana City project at the Sir Seretse Khama Airport Special Economic Zone, marking a significant milestone in Botswanaβs infrastructure and economic development agenda.
The transformative project is being developed through a partnership between BDC and the Albaddad Group and carries an estimated investment value of US$1.9 billion. Spanning 126 hectares, the development is expected to reshape the area into a modern commercial and tourism hub featuring a world-class convention and exhibition centre, four international hotels, retail spaces and other mixed-use developments.
Providing an overview of the project, BDC Managing Director Oteng Keabetwe said the corporationβs contribution includes land valued at P198 million, underscoring governmentβs commitment to attracting large-scale investment into the country.
βFor this project, we are contributing land which is valued at P198 million. The masterplan and Environmental Impact Assessment are concluded. We anticipate between 14,000 and 21,000 direct jobs during the construction phase and between 6,000 and 9,000 indirect jobs in total,β said Keabetwe.
The New Botswana City is expected to become one of the largest mixed-use developments in the country, positioning Botswana as a regional destination for business tourism, conferences, exhibitions and investment.
Beyond the infrastructure, the project is expected to deliver substantial economic benefits through job creation, skills transfer and increased business opportunities for local companies across various sectors.

The reconstruction of the 100-kilometre Nata-Gweta Road is gathering momentum, with project engineers saying significant progress across key components of the development is expected to enhance connectivity, support local communities, also stimulating regional trade.
According to Project Engineer Tumelo J. Mbaiwa, the project is advancing steadily despite initial challenges, with construction remaining largely on schedule. βThe project consists of five major components, namely the main Nata-Gweta road works, access roads in Tsokotshaa, Dzoroga and Gweta villages, the Gweta stormwater drainage system, a bypass road that will support traffic flow during construction, and the development of staff houses and offices in Gweta,β said Mbaiwa.
He said the construction of the bypass road has reached 75 percent completion and is expected to be finalized in July. Mbaiwa further noted that once it is complete, the bypass will facilitate the next phase of works on the main carriageway and help ensure minimal disruption to road users during the construction period.
Progress on the main road has also been encouraging. Bush clearing has been completed over 35 kilometres of the 100-kilometre stretch, while topsoil removal has reached 33 kilometres. Roadbed construction is underway, with 17 kilometres already completed.
βAlthough we experienced challenges related to waterlogged borrow pits, we have successfully addressed those issues and the project remains on track,β Mbaiwa said, expressing confidence that the project team is meeting key milestones despite operational challenges encountered earlier in the construction phase.
Led by HSNV Group, a 100 percent citizen-owned and citizen-run company, the Nata-Gweta Road Project is one of the Development Manager (DM) projects permitted to continue during the ongoing review of the DM model.
Upon completion, the project is expected to improve access to essential services, strengthen economic activity, support surrounding communities, and boost cross-border trade, further contributing to Botswanaβs infrastructure development agenda.
