National Earthquake Mock Drill Day 2026
On 21 September 2026, Samcholing Middle Secondary School conducted earthquake preparedness activities under the theme “Resilience Starts at Home.”
Students and staff participated in a Family Earthquake Preparedness Activity and two practical mock drills—one during class time and another in hostel—to practise Drop, Cover and Hold, safe evacuation, communication, and accountability.
The sharing of real earthquake experiences helped students connect the drills with real-life situations and understand why preparedness and regular practice are essential.
Through these activities, we reinforced an important message:
Prepare together. Practise together. Stay safe together.

Awareness Programme on HIV/AIDS, STI and Oral Health
An awareness programme on HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in Bhutan was conducted at the school by Mr. Pema Tenzin and Ms. Yeshey Wangmo from the Health Information Service Center (HISC), Kuengarabten, Trongsa. The programme aimed to enhance students’ awareness of HIV/AIDS and STIs, their transmission, prevention, testing, treatment, and the importance of avoiding stigma and discrimination.
The resource persons provided an overview of the HIV and STI situation in Bhutan, including common STIs, their signs and symptoms, possible consequences, and the importance of early diagnosis and treatment. They also discussed the major routes of HIV transmission and clarified common misconceptions about how HIV is and is not transmitted. Preventive measures, including safe practices, proper testing, and timely access to health services, were emphasised.
The discussion was further extended to oral health, with emphasis on oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMD), oral submucous fibrosis, oral cancer, its risk factors, and prevention. Students were encouraged to be aware of potential warning signs and the importance of seeking timely professional care.
The resource persons also highlighted the LGBTIQ community and the importance of providing inclusive and appropriate health services to all individuals. The session emphasised understanding, respect, confidentiality, and the need to avoid stigma and discrimination while ensuring access to health information and services.
Overall, the programme provided students with valuable information on HIV/AIDS, STIs, and related health concerns, while promoting preventive practices, responsible health-seeking behaviour, and a non-discriminatory attitude towards people affected by HIV or STIs.
The school sincerely appreciates Mr. Pema Tenzin and Ms. Yeshey Wangmo for their valuable contribution towards strengthening health awareness among the students.
