Students from the Computing Technologies Department(CTD) proudly represented the department at the International Conference on Science, Engineering and Technology (ICSciEnTec 2026), held from 28th to 30th April 2026 in Thimphu.

As part of the conference, three student projects and research initiatives from the department were selected for presentation, providing students with the opportunity to showcase their research and innovations on such a great platform.

One of the final year projects, titled โ€œSmart Zebra Crossing Monitoring System using AI,โ€ was undertaken by four students: Nyingye Metog Dorji, Dorji Wangmo, Sonam Dechen Lhaki, and Dorji Wangchuk. The team, led by Nyingye Metog Dorji, presented a poster highlighting the application of AIoT technologies to enhance road safety. The project is carried out as an Industry Research Project in collaboration with the GovTech Agency. Owing to the relevance and practical applicability of the project, it also attracted media attention and was featured by Bhutan Broadcasting Service (BBS) https://www.tiktok.com//video/7634027250437950741?_r=1&_t=ZS-95w8zbA86zf

Another project from the 3SWE programme, represented by Namgyel Wangchuk and team members, presented a poster titled โ€œSmart Campus Facilities Management System.โ€ The project focused on improving campus operations and management through digital solutions and smart technologies.

In addition, Sonam Eyden, a second-year IT student, presented her research paper titled โ€œDrukSerenity: A Culturally-Aware Multi-Agent Chatbot Framework for Mental Health Support in Bhutanโ€ during the AI-focused technical sessions on Day 2 of the conference.

Through their participation, the students engaged with a diverse community of researchers, academics, and industry professionals. The conference fostered a collaborative environment where participants from different academic backgrounds exchanged ideas, discussed innovative projects, and learned from one anotherโ€™s expertise. It also provided valuable opportunities for students to interact with industry professionals, gain practical insights, and build meaningful academic and professional networks.

The Computing Technologies Department (CTD) is proud to announce the launch of DzoNext, a Dzongkha Next-Word Prediction system, officially unveiled today at the 4th International Conference on Science, Engineering, and Technology (ICSciEnTec 2026) in Thimphu.

Dzongkha typing has been time-consuming and requires several keypresses. The earlier studies on syllable and word prediction used 31,199 and 10,000 Dzongkha sentences (Wangchuk et al., 2022, 2023). In the third iteration, the study moved beyond earlier small-scale studies to train a GPT-2 Extra Large model on approximately 900,000 sentences. This achieves a historic 1.5B Parameter Benchmark for Dzongkha language processing.

This breakthrough was made possible through a Nu. 12.3M investment in high-performance computing (4x H100 94GB VRAM), co-funded by the Royal Government of Bhutan and the College of Science and Technology.

Congratulations to the team:
Principal Investigator: Mr. Karma Wangchuk
Co-Investigators: Mr. Pema Thinley, Mr. Jeevan Gurung, Mrs. Kezang Dema, and Mr. Pema Galey

The Computing Technologies Department would like to thank OVC, RUB Research Endowment Fund for their support (Nu. 499,925.80).

Two senior faculty members of the Computing Technologies Department (CTD) - Mr. Parshu Ram Dhungyel, Head of Department, and Mr. Tsheten Dorji have successfully completed a 5-day Capacity Building ASIIN Workshop on โ€œInternational Higher Education Quality Assurance Criteria and Programme Accreditationโ€ at the ASIIN Academy in Dรผsseldorf, Germany, from 12th to 16th January 2026. They participated alongside 7 other participants - 5 from other Departments of the College of Science and Technology (CST) and 2 from Sherubtse College (SC) under the Royal University of Bhutan (RUB).

The workshop aimed to strengthen institutional capacity in internationalization and global academic quality assurance standards. Currently, CTD/CST is submitting the Self-Assessment Report for the Bachelor of Engineering in Information Technology programme for international ASIIN and EUR-ACEยฎ accreditation. If successful, this will mark a major milestone for CTD/CST, and RUB in advancing global recognition of the programme. The second periodic review of the IT programme was conducted in 2022 based on the international standard of IEEE/ACM โ€˜s IT curriculum guidelines, strengthening its internationalization efforts.

CTD extends its sincere gratitude to the ASIIN Academy (German Quality Assurance Agency) and CST/RUB management for their support in making this capacity-building initiative possible.
