“For best director, we have selected the man behind one of this year’s sweetest stories, awarding Tom Van Avermaet for his direction in Hearts of Stone. The short takes a quirky premise—a ‘living statue’ street performer falling in love with an actual statue—and plays it entirely straight. For the members of the Ravenheart jury, it made sure our hearts were anything but cold. Van Avermaet’s vision is crystal clear, weaving a tender tale of unusual love with a subtle social critique, all with a steady hand.”
