"When the first wisps of “Relinquishment” made it onto paper, it did not yet bear its name. Nor did the project that would later become Somberlayne exist in its current formation.
Driven by an impending sense of the changing season, Quentin wrote an introspective piece built around cold and atmospheric melancholy.
When he reached out to Samppa and Rik they were immediately drawn to his musings. Samppa was able to merge Quentin’s notes, Rik’s words and his own technical prowess into the first single Somberlayne presents today."

After more than twenty years of playing guitar and working with all kinds of artists, this feels like a small victory and a real relief. I’m finally sharing my first original composition, Relinquishment. It’s my take on cold, melodic, melancholic Nordic metal, built around fading memories, a bit of inner darkness and the need to let go. I wanted our first release to feel emotional, heavy and honest.

was born from this track, and I couldn’t have asked for better people to shape it with me. Rik van Schaaik brought the lyrics and voice to life, and Samppa Hirvonen, from Division XIX and early Nightwish, laid down the bass and crafted the sound with us.

It took me years to realize that playing, producing, or covering music wasn’t the same as creating it.
For over two decades I learned, admired, and paid tribute to the artists who shaped me.
But composing something truly my own? That used to terrify me.

I’d hide behind perfectionism, fear of judgment, and the illusion that imitation was enough.
This year, something changed.I stopped caring about being perfect and started caring about being real.

That’s how was born: a melodic death metal project forged from the ghosts of what I couldn’t express before.
It’s not about fame or recognition, it’s about release, deliverance, and growth.

Our first track is coming soon.
Until then, here’s a glimpse of the path that led to it.

A couple of days ago, I moved my home studio from the krrrypt up to.... a regular bedroom. This is my “Was it really a good idea?” face… Nah, just kidding. 😅
The acoustics are TERRIBLE for now, but let’s be honest, as much as every decent metal songwriter needs daaarkness to summon riffs, a bit of daylight and a view of the forest might actually help. The sound will come together and so will the music. Stay tuned. 🤘
