UNFOLLOW THE LEADER
Book Launch – 2 April 2026 — 18:00
Library of Sint Lucas Antwerpen, Van Schoonbekestraat 143
In a culture driven by speed, visibility, and algorithms, what does design mean today?
Unfollow the Leader reflects on the evolving role of graphic designers in a world shaped by digital platforms, economic forces, and artificial intelligence. Developed within an educational context and rooted in student work, the book examines the tensions between craft and technology, autonomy and dependency, and tradition and disruption.
At its core, the idea is that design is not about form, but attitude—the willingness to question what seems self-evident.
Conversation moderated by

Tess Ego — alumna
Claudia Cuypers — student

Unfollow the Leader
New book — launch on 2 April 2026
In a culture driven by speed, visibility and algorithms, what does it mean to design today?
Unfollow the Leader explores the changing position of the graphic designer in a world shaped by digital platforms, economic logics and artificial intelligence. Developed in an educational context and rooted in student work, the book traces the tensions between craft and technology, autonomy and dependency, tradition and disruption.
Moving between history and contemporary practice, it argues that the essence of design lies not in form, but in attitude: the willingness to question what seems self-evident.

Unfollow the Leader. New book. Coming soon.
In a world where visibility and speed dominate the discourse, slowing down is a radical act. In a culture driven by the constant urge to be seen — to perform, to optimise, to translate existence into metrics — Unfollow the Leader: Student Perspectives on the Graphic Design Canon examines the shifting position of the graphic designer within systems shaped by algorithms and economic doctrine. From canon to controversy. From craft to AI. Rather than offering certainty, this book calls for attitude — the courage to question visibility itself, to doubt what appears inevitable, and to begin again. Because innovation begins where the self-evident loses its authority.

Unfollow the Leader. New book. Coming soon.
Design is not about being seen. It is about seeing clearly. In a culture ruled by algorithms and accelerated by AI, visibility is constant while reflection becomes rare. Unfollow the Leader — Student perspectives on the graphic design canon returns to the canon not only to preserve it as a living archive, but to reactivate it as a field of dialogue and future possibility. History is not a monument; it is material. Not obedience. Not nostalgia. Not noise. A recalibration.

Images of an architect. Grateful for the invitation to speak about book design at the University of Antwerp’s Department of Architecture. Sharing a glimpse of the hundred-image journey through books, layouts, and the ephemera that bring design stories to life.

Artist Jo De Smedt takes over the legendary De Ziener Gallery!
Step inside Atelier Heksenketel, where Jo De Smedt unveils a bold and razor-sharp body of work built over three decades — from 1994 to 2025. His universe stretches from underground comic arts and dark poetry to haunting World War I relics. Expect striking visuals: drawn, printed, painted — mostly black & white, with wild bursts of color.
This is an artist at the peak of his powers. Don’t miss the chance to experience this intense and uncompromising work in person.
