In de derde lezing van onze reeks U-turn: 5 jaar later namen Wouter Schepers (HIVA – KU Leuven) en Nele Vanderhulst (Sociaalcultureel) ons mee in twee boeiende perspectieven op gemeenschapsopbouw na de pandemie.

Wouter toonde aan hoe groen, bankjes, buren en voorzieningen het verschil kunnen maken tussen verbondenheid en eenzaamheid. Nele onderzocht of de golf van burgerinitiatieven tijdens corona een echte maatschappelijke kentering inluidde of eerder toont waar overheid en markt tekortschoten.

🇪🇺 Vandaag is het Europadag. 🇪🇺 Wat is Europa nog waard in een wereld vol tribalisering, propaganda en oorlog?

Op 28 april sloot UCSIA haar lezingenreeks 'U-turn: 5 jaar later' af met een confronterende dubbellezing. Geopolitieke analist Koert Debeuf (VUB) legde uit hoe de wereld al sinds 2006 aan het tribaliseren is — en hoe COVID die neerwaartse spiraal versnelde in plaats van om te keren. Journalist Maarten Rabaey (De Morgen) bekeek hoe de vrije pers zelf onder vuur ligt, en toch een ontmijnende rol kan spelen.

Over Europa waren ze allebei eerlijk: het geloofwaardigheidskapitaal is aangetast. Maar er is ook hoop. Europa is sterker dan het zelf vaak denkt — economisch, politiek en ook militair. Middelgrote landen die samenwerken kunnen meer bereiken dan velen denken.

"Als er één continent is dat het kan doen, zal het Europa zijn", aldus Debeuf. De handschoen ligt klaar. 🥊
