TYPP #8 - Blind Spot 👁

Pierre-Antoine Vettorello and Nyanchama Okemwa share their research practices on African textiles and their contemporary use in curatorial contexts. By critically re-examining a number of past exhibitions in Belgium, they relate the story of African textiles, their meaning and use in rituals, for memory-making or as spiritual carriers. How can the Belgian curatorial scene showcase African fashion and its fabrics without covering up the wounds of colonialism with the splendour of these textiles? 🧵🪡

TYPP # 8 - Blind Spot 👁

Haseeb Ahmed dived into the scientific and political history of the Peenemünde wind tunnel, a machine developed to experiment with the highest possible speeds. It was designed by and for military scientists in N**i Germany. After the war, the machine was moved to the US, along with the same scientists who created weapons of war and who would be later at the foundation of NASA and the American space race. Ahmed created a scroll drawing of this machine and shows its purpose as a contemporary artefact of the future, revealing the dark patches of our history 🌪

TYPP #8 Blind Spot 👁

Bent Vande Sompele samples and manipulates his way through cyberspace to discover patterns of folklore in music in digital composing. He is inspired by traditions in music and folklore in East Asia. Bent researches how the stories we forget, the blind spots in local traditions, could be rekindled through contemporary music and technology 🎶🎛🥁

TYPP #8 - Artist Haseeb Ahmed contributed to our latest issue with an essay about his research on the Pennemunde Scroll.

The scroll consists of a four meter long drawing of a rubbing (a documentation technique to prevent transportation for anti-espionage and security reasons) of the world's first hypersonic wind tunnels, a drawing that Ahmed discovered at the NATO-von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics. The institute celebrated it's one hundredth birthday last winter. It is one of Europe's oldest and largest institutes for aeronautic research. Ahmed turns the wind tunnel and the Pennemunde scroll into an anachronistic piece to see its operational context in a new way.

Go see the scroll and other beautiful installation works at his soloshow at in Brussels, and read his contribution in TYPP #8!

Join us at the launch of our new issue! Come and toast with us to TYPP #8 at research week (info below) 🍹

This issue is about our blind spots. The human eye is designed with one flaw: the punctum caecum or the blind spot. We tend to be biased towards things we cannot fully 'see through'. How can we enlighten our blind spots? What kind of artistic practices inspire new readings of history, art, music, or even politics?

TYPP #7 🧿 The structures of knowledge that have been created over the centuries may seem rock solid, but they're rusty and discriminate against new ways of thinking. Liesbet Bussche and Irma Földényi reveal the harmful structure of the diamond industry in which jewellery designers have to operate, while also exploring the possibilities of synthetic diamonds 💎
