Vandaag wordt Museum De Reede 9 jaar! 🎉

Negen jaar geleden openden we onze deuren met een bijzondere missie: een plek creëren waar grafiek van wereldniveau centraal staat. Sindsdien mochten we duizenden bezoekers ontvangen, tientallen tentoonstellingen organiseren en de kunst van Goya, Rops, Munch en vele andere kunstenaars met jullie delen.

Dat we vandaag onze 9de verjaardag vieren, hebben we te danken aan iedereen die ons door de jaren heen heeft gesteund: onze vrijwilligers, bezoekers, kunstenaars, bruikleengevers, sponsors, partners en vrienden.

Dank jullie wel om deel uit te maken van ons verhaal. Op naar nog vele jaren vol kunst, verwondering en ontdekkingen!

Today Museum De Reede turns 9! 🎉

Nine years ago, we opened our doors with a simple but ambitious mission: to create a place where graphic art of the highest quality could take centre stage. Since then, we have welcomed thousands of visitors, organised dozens of exhibitions, and shared the art of Goya, Rops, Munch, and many other artists with all of you.

We owe this 9th birthday to everyone who has supported us over the years: our volunteers, visitors, artists, lenders, sponsors, partners and friends.

Thank you for being part of our story. Here’s to many more years of art, discovery, and inspiration!

Neo Rauch (Leipzig, 1960) geldt als een van de belangrijkste kunstenaars van zijn generatie. Aan het einde van de twintigste eeuw leverde hij een beslissende bijdrage aan de herpositionering van de figuratie in de schilderkunst. In een tijd waarin abstractie en conceptuele kunst het discours domineerden, koos hij voor een radicaal autonome, raadselachtige beeldtaal waarin narratieve fragmenten, historische echo’s en visioenen samenkomen.

De tentoonstelling “Gleichgewicht – Evenwicht” toont een brede selectie kleurrijke werken op papier uit bijna vier decennia en laat een doorlopend artistiek traject zien dat Rauch parallel aan zijn schilderkunst heeft ontwikkeld. Rauchs werk onderstreept overtuigend dat grafische kunst een volwaardige kunstdiscipline is die op gelijke hoogte staat met andere kunstvormen.

Neo Rauch (Leipzig, 1960) is considered one of the most important artists of his generation. At the end of the twentieth century, he made a decisive contribution to the repositioning of figuration in painting. At a time when abstraction and conceptual art dominated the discourse, he chose a radically autonomous and enigmatic visual language in which narrative fragments, historical echoes, and visions converge.

The exhibition “Gleichgewicht – Balance” presents a wide selection of colorful works on paper spanning nearly four decades, revealing a continuous artistic trajectory that Rauch has developed alongside his painting. His work convincingly demonstrates that graphic art is a fully-fledged discipline, equal in stature to other art forms.

De kunst van René De Coninck (1907–1978) is onlosmakelijk verbonden met Antwerpen. Hoewel hij in Bredene werd geboren, vormen de straten en gebouwen van Antwerpen het decor voor zijn groteske, fantasierijke beeldtaal. Zijn werk wordt vaak omschreven als magisch realisme, waarin het surreële naadloos verweven is met het herkenbare en het hedendaagse.

De mini-expo “’s Werelds Toneel” maakt deel uit van onze drieluiktentoonstelling, die loopt t.e.m. 8 juni. Kom langs en laat je onderdompelen in de speelse, wonderlijke wereld van René De Coninck.

The art of René De Coninck (1907–1978) is deeply intertwined with Antwerp. Although he was born in Bredene, Antwerp’s streets and architecture often serve as the stage for his grotesque and imaginative visual language. His work is commonly described as magical realism, where the surreal blends seamlessly with the familiar and the contemporary.

The mini exhibition “The World’s Theater” is part of our three-part exhibition, on view until June 8. Come and immerse yourself in the playful, wondrous world of René De Coninck.

Duik in het internationale Project Babel (i.s.m. Foundation Veerle Rooms Private Stichting), waarin maar liefst 342 kunstenaars het iconische werk van Pieter Bruegel de Oude herinterpreteren. Ontdek daarnaast de speelse en prikkelende prenten van Maite Cascón, die de menselijke geest onder de loep neemt, en een intieme selectie uit het visionaire oeuvre van René De Coninck.

Three exhibitions, one story: the richness of graphic art ✨

Dive into the international Project Babel (in collaboration with Foundation Veerle Rooms Private Stichting), where 342 artists reinterpret the iconic work of Pieter Bruegel the Elder. Discover the detailed and thought-provoking prints of Maite Cascón, who playfully probes the human mind, alongside an intimate selection from the visionary oeuvre of René De Coninck.

Maite Cascon (°1991, Madrid) maakt prenten die je meenemen in een speels, drukbevolkt universum. Haar werk wemelt van figuren en symbolen en verkent mythen en geloofssystemen die zich door de eeuwen heen hebben ontwikkeld — soms absurd, soms gewelddadig, maar steeds diep verankerd in de menselijke natuur. Met een scherpe blik en speelse humor toont Cascon hoe deze overgeleverde ideeën ons denken vandaag nog steeds beïnvloeden, terwijl ze ze tegelijk herdenkt en openstelt voor verandering en nieuwe interpretaties.

Museum De Reede bezit een van Maite Cascons absolute hoogtepunten, Tricksters’ Tree, waarvan details te zien zijn op de beelden. Vanaf 10 april presenteert het museum een volledige tentoonstelling rond Cascons werk, naast twee andere tijdelijke tentoonstellingen. Mis deze kans niet om haar werk te ontdekken.

Maite Cascon (b. 1991, Madrid) is a Spanish artist whose prints draw viewers into a whimsical, densely populated universe. Teeming with figures and symbols, her works explore myths and belief systems shaped over centuries — sometimes absurd, sometimes violent, yet all deeply embedded in human nature. With a sharp eye and a playful sense of humour, Cascon exposes how these inherited ideas continue to shape the way we think today, while reimagining them in ways that leave room for change and reinterpretation.

Museum De Reede owns one of Maite Cascon’s standout works, Tricksters’ Tree, details of which can be seen in the images. From 10 April, the museum will present a full exhibition of Cascon’s work, alongside two other temporary exhibitions. Don’t miss the chance to see it.
