Global South Asia is pleased to announce that poet, essayist, translator, and editor Shan Uday Shankar Durjay has accepted our invitation to feature in our upcoming video interview series.
Residing in London since 2007, Uday embodies the transnational South Asian literary experience. Although his formal academic foundations lie in Computer Science and Information Systems, his intellectual trajectory demonstrates a profound and sustained engagement with the humanities. From his earliest narratives concerning the Bangladesh Liberation War to his critically acclaimed poetry and essay collections, he has devoted decades to exploring the complex inter-sections of memory, language, and geography.
The focal point of our dialogue will be his ongoing and vital intervention within the sphere of independent publishing, specifically his leadership of POL International Literary Magazine.
Inaugurated in London in 2019, POL functions as an active cultural conduit rather than a mere periodical. Uday has cultivated a dedicated platform explicitly engineered to elevate Bengali literature to the international stage. Through rigorous translation and meticulous intercultural curation, the journal introduces the depth of Bengali writers to an Anglophone readership while simultaneously presenting global voices in translation alongside them.
Within a literary ecosystem where access to the global sphere is frequently mediated by dominant Western publishing conglomerates, his editorial stewardship of POL, alongside his earlier tenure directing the little magazine Spandan, represents the indispensable grassroots labor required to foster genuine and reciprocal literary exchange.
The conversation will explore:
• The overarching mission, operational mechanics, and institutional challenges of directing POL International Literary Magazine from the diaspora
• The artistry and inherent politics involved in translating Bengali literature for a global audience
• The ways in which his transnational identity, being rooted in Bangladesh, educated in India, and residing in the United Kingdom, informs his editorial and creative vision
• The enduring significance of the little magazine movement in amplifying independent global voices

২০২৩ সালের জানুয়ারি মাসে আমি প্রথম পড়াতে শুরু করি। এর আগে ক্লাস নিয়েছিলাম শেষবার বাংলাদেশের খাগড়াছড়ির পাশে মাটিরাঙাতে, পাহাড়ে, একটি পাঠশালা'তে। যেখানে সমস্ত শিক্ষার্থীরা ছিলো অবাঙালী শিশু। আমার একজন বন্ধু সেই পাহাড়ে থাকতো চাকরিসূত্রে, তাঁর আমন্ত্রণেই আমি মাটিরাঙা'তে গিয়েছিলাম। কখনো সেই ছবি প্রকাশ করবো, সেটা নিয়ে একটা আঞ্চলিক নিউজ পোর্টালে আমি একটা আর্টিকেলও প্রকাশ করেছিলাম।

২০২৩ সালে বাংলাদেশের ছাত্রছাত্রীদের ইংরেজি ভাষা শিক্ষা দেবার ধারণা আমার মনে আসে ঢাকা থেকে মানিকগঞ্জের বাসে বসে। তখনই আমি একটা ফেসবুক পোস্ট লিখে ফেললাম একটা গ্রুপে আর সেটা ভাইরাল হয়ে গেলো। পিয়াস আমাকে একবার জিজ্ঞেস করেছিলো, 'স্যার ছাত্রদের যেমন প্রিয় শিক্ষক থাকে তেমনি শিক্ষকদেরও কী প্রিয় ছাত্র থাকে?' আমি বলেছিলাম, থাকে। আমার প্রিয় ছাত্র হলো পিয়াস, প্রিন্স, নাদিম, আবদুল্লাহ, আমিনা, পুষ্প, আরেকজনের নাম মনে করতে পারছিনা, নরসিংদীতে একটা হাসপাতালে চাকরি করতেন। অনেক পরিশ্রম করে ক্লাস করতে আসতেন।
আমার আরেকজন ব্রিলিয়ান্ট ছাত্র ছিলো যাঁকে আমি A brief history of England, এন্থনি টয়েনের বই পড়িয়েছি। আরও অনেকে থাকতে পারে। তাঁদের অনেকেই এখন পৃথিবীর বিভিন্ন দেশে থাকেন। আমার ছাত্ররা উজ্জ্বলতার সাথে বিভিন্ন দেশে অবস্থান করছেন। প্রিন্স চীনে একটা ফুল স্কলারশিপ নিয়ে, আরেকজন আরেকটি বিখ্যাত স্কলারশিপ নিয়ে পিএইচডি করছেন আরেকটি দেশে, আমিনা ইউরোপের কোনো একটি দেশে, মনে পড়েছে- অস্ট্রিয়া'তে, আরও অনেকে অনেক দিকে চলে গেছেন, সব একসাথে মনে পড়বেনা।

নরসিংদীতে আমার থাকার ইচ্ছা ছিলো সর্বোচ্চ তিন বছর, কিন্তু আমাদের প্রকল্প নয় মাসের মধ্যেই তার সার্কেল সম্পন্ন করে। আমাদের ম্যানেজমেন্ট তখন তাদের ট্রেনিং শেষ করে নতুন কর্মস্থলে ফিরে যায়। নরসিংদী শহরে সেবারই এতোটা সময় থেকেছি। আমার স্নেহের ফাহিম আমাকে একদিন একটা সম্পূর্ণ দিন উপহার দিয়েছিলো। দিনটা ছিলো মেঘলা। আমরা বেশকিছু মণ্ডপ পরিদর্শন করে, নরসিংদীর বাজার, যেখানে কালীমন্দির তার আশেপাশে, দুপুরের খাবার খেয়ে নদীতে নেমে যাই নৌকা নিয়ে। আমাদের সাথে আরও কয়েকজন সঙ্গী ছিলো। আর ছিলো সুধা ও গজল।
