Boro rice production has become risky in the Barind region (Rajshahi, Naogaon, and Chapainawabganj) as groundwater levels have been declining. Here, deep tube well owners charge poor farmers a higher price for irrigation water. The cases of farmers’ suicides have occurred due to the higher cost of rice production.

So it is not the war, but the imposed dependence on fossil fuel, electricity and mechanization, which made the crisis deeper. It will not be solved by ending the war. The crisis has just begun.

আধুনিক বোরো ধান রক্ষার্থে হাওরে অকাল বন্যা এবং পাহাড়ি ঢল থেকে রক্ষা পাওয়ার জন্য বাঁধ দেয়া হয়। এই কাজের দায়িত্ব পানি সম্পদ মন্ত্রণালয়ের অধীন পানি উন্নয়ন বোর্ডের। অর্থাৎ কৃষি মন্ত্রণালয়ের বোরো ধান রক্ষার দায়িত্ব নিয়েছে পানি উন্নয়ন বোর্ড, যার প্রধান কাজ হচ্ছে মাটি কাটা এবং বাঁধ দেয়া। এটা তাদের প্রজেক্ট। কিন্তু এই বাঁধগুলো অধিকাংশ সময় অপরিকল্পিতভাবে করা হয় এবং সময়মতো শেষ হয় না। প্রয়োজনে-অপ্রয়োজনে ফসল রক্ষার নামে হাওরের যেখানে-সেখানে বাঁধ তৈরি করা হয়েছে। এসব বাঁধের কারণে হাওর থেকে বৃষ্টির পানি নামার রাস্তাগুলো বন্ধ হয়ে গেছে। টানা বৃষ্টিতে তৈরি হয়েছে জলাবদ্ধতা।

Bangladesh signed the US Reciprocal Trade Agreement on February 9, 2026, just three days before the national election. Within two weeks, the US Supreme Court ruled that the tariff regime underpinning such agreements—imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA)—violated federal law. The ruling represents a victory for the rule of law and the US constitutional framework. Immediately after that, Malaysia declared its agreement with the US “null and void,” establishing a precedent for sovereign reassessment of such deals.

The Bangladesh Interim Government, to avoid the reimposition of the reciprocal tariff rate (37 percent) proposed on April 2, 2025, on top of the usual most-favoured-nation (MFN) tariffs on certain or all Bangladeshi imports, signed the deal. Upon signing the “trade deal,” the US reduced the reciprocal tariff rate to 19 percent on Bangladesh’s originating goods. This was perceived as a “relief,” but at what cost?
