I used to think I had a good grasp of marketing…until I dove into the actual work.

Two months ago, when I joined The Basics Woman, I felt confident about my marketing knowledge. Previously, I focused on strategy, creating presentations, frameworks, and overarching plans. In that realm, it's easy to convince yourself that the thinking process is the main challenge.

However, my experience in a startup has entirely changed that perception. With a direct-to-consumer (D2C) brand, there’s no choice but to move beyond just strategy. You’re responsible for launching the ads, crafting the copy, analyzing the data, troubleshooting the Shopify backend, designing the email sequences, and sometimes even redoing a campaign late at night if the outcomes are disappointing.

That’s when it hits you: Ideas come cheap. It’s all about ex*****on.

Here are my observations so far:

💭 Speed is more important than perfection. You can try something on a Monday, analyze the results by Wednesday, and make changes by Friday. Waiting for weeks to make it flawless simply isn’t viable.

💭 The data doesn’t care about your preferences. You may be attached to a certain piece of copy or a creative idea, but if the return on ad spend (ROAS) and click-through rates (CTRs) aren't up to par, it just won’t work. End of story.

Honestly, it’s been a humbling experience. Ex*****on reveals all. There’s no way to mask under fancy language or theories - you find out what succeeds and what fails, and you make adjustments swiftly.

I’m beginning to understand that strategy is merely 10% of the process. The remaining 90% occurs when you finally hit “publish.”

I’m still in the learning phase, far from being an expert. This has probably been my most significant lesson thus far, and it’s just the first of many insights I hope to share about working in a startup.
