একাত্তরের ২৫ মার্চ রাতে পাকিস্তানি সামরিক বাহিনী ঠাণ্ডা মাথায় নিরস্ত্র, নিরপরাধ ও ঘুমন্ত সাধারণ বাঙালির ওপর যেভাবে হত্যাযজ্ঞ চালিয়েছিল, তা পৃথিবীর ইতিহাসে অন্যতম ভয়াবহ গণহত্যার নজির। ২০১৭ সাল থেকে এ দিনটি ‘গণহত্যা দিবস’ হিসেবে স্মরণ করা হচ্ছে।
