Out of nowhere, the clouds drifted into the tea gardens as if the mountains decided to come a little closer.

As soon as I arrived in Colombo, the bright weather and shiny high-rise buildings were quickly overshadowed by something else that caught my eye even more. The colorful local buses of Sri Lanka. Covered with religious symbols, stickers, route names and writings in Sinhala and Tamil, every bus seemed impossible to ignore. After observing them for a while, I noticed that most of the buses revolved around shades of blue, red and pink. It made me wonder, what is the story behind these vibrant public buses?

In Sri Lanka, both government and privately owned buses operate on public routes. One of the easiest ways to tell them apart is through their appearance. Government buses usually look plain and functional. Private buses on the other hand are decorated according to the owner's taste. Many owners say that younger family members often play the biggest role in choosing the colors and designs.

These privately owned buses carry distinct personalities on the road. In many cases, owners imagine their buses as female characters. That is why colors like red and pink are so common. The buses are also given names such as “Gindari”, “Japan Kella”, “Rosa Rajina” and “Maye Manika”. Over time the buses become more than just a source of income. They turn into a part of the owner's identity and emotion. Some drivers also place statues of Buddha or Ganesha beside the steering wheel as an expression of religious belief.

Most buses in Sri Lanka are built on old Tata chassis or Indian Ashok Leyland bodies. After the 2013 joint venture many of them started operating under the name Lanka Ashok Leyland. While the structure of the buses may look similar to buses in other countries, Sri Lankan buses stand out because of their visual transformation. As this culture became more popular across the country, a separate creative industry also emerged around bus modification. Design agencies like VIKUM CREATION, LBN BELIATTA and PROLINE ADVERTISING now specialize in colorful bus designs and visual styling.

If I had the chance, I would spend an entire day walking through the streets of Colombo just photographing these buses. Unfortunately I could not make enough time for it. Because once you enter the alleys or bus terminals of Colombo, it feels less like a transport system and more like a moving art gallery.
