Designed for the youth, The Cozy Bean reinterprets café culture through warmth, flow, and quiet character. The initial brief was simple yet evocative—create a space that truly lives up to its name: a cozy coffee destination in the heart of Dhanmondi.

Working with a challenging linear site, zoning became a critical design driver. Rather than fragmenting the space, the plan unfolds as a continuous experience, guiding visitors seamlessly from entry to seating while maintaining visual and spatial cohesion.

At the heart of the café, a free-flowing sculptural counter anchors the interior—its grand, fluid gesture inviting the crowd inward before gently transitioning them into a more intimate, comforting environment. Material choices, proportions, and lighting are carefully calibrated to balance openness with enclosure, resulting in a café that feels both welcoming and personal.

The Cozy Bean is not just a place to have coffee—it is a spatial narrative of comfort, connection, and contemporary youth culture.

সাম্প্রতিক ভূমিকম্পের প্রেক্ষিতে ঢাকায় জরুরি পদক্ষেপ নেওয়ার প্রয়োজনীয়তা এখন আর কোনোভাবেই কমিয়ে দেখানো যায় না। বিশেষজ্ঞরা সতর্ক করছেন—আমরা যে কম্পন অনুভব করেছি, তা হয়তো কেবল একটি প্রাথমিক সতর্কবার্তা; আরও গভীর ও ধ্বংসাত্মক ঝুঁকি এখনো খুব বাস্তবভাবে বিদ্যমান।

ঢাকার সিসমিক রেজিলিয়েন্স মূলত ক্ষতিগ্রস্ত হয়েছে আমাদের নিজস্ব নগর-ব্যবস্থাপনার ব্যর্থতায়। অপরিকল্পিত নির্মাণ, বিল্ডিং কোড লঙ্ঘন, এবং নিয়ন্ত্রণহীন ঘনত্ব—এগুলো মিলিয়ে শহরের বড় একটি অংশকে কার্যত কাঠামোগত মৃত্যুফাঁদে পরিণত করেছে। নগর পরিকল্পনাবিদ ও নির্মাণ বিশেষজ্ঞদের মতে, বহু ঝুঁকিপূর্ণ ভবন নির্মিত হয়েছে ভরাট করা জলাভূমিতে, সরু সড়কের মাঝে, এবং দুর্বল মৃত্তিকার ওপর—যেখানে ভূতাত্ত্বিক বা সিসমিক বাস্তবতাকে সম্পূর্ণ উপেক্ষা করা হয়েছে।

এর চেয়েও উদ্বেগজনক হলো—ঢাকার উল্লেখযোগ্য সংখ্যক ভবন সঠিক নথিপত্র, অনুমোদন বা কাঠামোগত যাচাই ছাড়াই পরিচালিত হচ্ছে। অনেক ভবনই বাংলাদেশ ন্যাশনাল বিল্ডিং কোড (BNBC) অনুসরণ করে না। বাস্তবে, seismic load path continuity, shear strength, joint ductility, এবং load redistribution capacity—এসব মৌলিক কাঠামোগত বিবেচনা অনেক ক্ষেত্রেই উপেক্ষিত। বিশেষজ্ঞরা বলছেন, এর ফলে শক্তিশালী ভূমিকম্পের সময় progressive failure-এর ঝুঁকি বহুগুণ বেড়ে যায়।

আমাদের সাম্প্রতিক একটি প্রকল্পে আমরা এমনই একটি পুরনো ভবন পর্যালোচনার দায়িত্ব পাই, যা এসব পদ্ধতিগত ঝুঁকির স্পষ্ট উদাহরণ। আমরা ভবনটির পূর্ণাঙ্গ structural audit সম্পন্ন করি—load distribution behavior, joint performance এবং এসব সীমাবদ্ধতা কীভাবে spatial quality-তে প্রভাব ফেলছে তা বিশদভাবে বিশ্লেষণ করি। এ ভিত্তিতে আমরা Level 1 থেকে Level 3 পর্যায়ের সিসমিক রেট্রোফিটিং প্রযুক্তি প্রয়োগ করি, যার মধ্যে Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) দিয়ে beam strengthening অন্তর্ভুক্ত ছিল। এই সমাধান ভবনের flexural ও shear capacity উল্লেখযোগ্যভাবে বাড়ায়, ductility উন্নত করে, এবং তা ভবনের ব্যবহার ব্যাহত না করেই সম্পন্ন করা যায়।

এ ধরনের ইন্টারভেনশন আমাদের দীর্ঘমেয়াদি কাঠামোগত স্থায়িত্ব, নিরাপত্তা এবং পরিবেশগত দায়বদ্ধতার প্রতি অঙ্গীকারকে প্রতিফলিত করে।

এটি শুধু নকশাগত সিদ্ধান্ত নয়। ঢাকার মতো দ্রুত-বর্ধনশীল ও নিয়ন্ত্রণহীনভাবে ঘনবসতিপূর্ণ শহরে ভূমিকম্পের ঝুঁকি মোকাবেলায় রেট্রোফিটিংই একমাত্র বাস্তবসম্মত ও দায়িত্বশীল সমাধান।

আমরা স্থপতিরা আছি—এই শহরের জন্য, এই দেশের জন্য। কিন্তু সামনে এগিয়ে আসতে হবে যৌথভাবে।
পেশাদার নকশা কোনো বিলাসিতা নয়—এটি একান্তই প্রয়োজনীয়তা।
প্রতিটি ভবন—ছোট বা বড়—
লাইসেন্স প্রাপ্ত স্থপতি ও প্রকৌশলীর মাধ্যমে সঠিকভাবে নকশাবদ্ধ, তত্ত্বাবধানে নির্মিত এবং কাঠামোগতভাবে যাচাই করা আবশ্যক।

আমরা যদি বিপর্যয় ঘটার অপেক্ষা করি, তবে এর মূল্য হবে অসহনীয়ভাবে বেশি।

Every urban dweller dreams—at least once—of escaping the constant rush of city life, retreating to a corner of green where time slows down.

On a 9 katha plot in Bashundhara, we shaped this vacation home for a family of four. Conceived as a temporary container house, it reflects the client’s vision of a warm, cozy haven where simplicity meets comfort—an oasis of calm away from the bustle, yet within the city’s reach.
