Best looking bike ever 🤍

There's a quiet assumption in cycling culture that if you prefer to ride alone, something must be wrong with you.

You're anti-social. You're not a "real" cyclist. You're missing out on the camaraderie, the drafting, the shared suffering that makes the sport what it is. But here's the truth that rarely gets said out loud: some of the most dedicated, skilled, and mentally balanced riders on the road do the vast majority of their miles solo. And they're not apologizing for it.

The research backs this up. A 2025 study published in BMJ Open found that solo cycling significantly reduces cortisol levels and boosts mental clarity, creating what neuroscientists call a "moving meditation" state. Riders report being able to process emotions, reset their nervous systems, and gain perspective in ways that group dynamics simply don't allow.

When you're alone, you're not managing egos. You're not navigating unpredictable wheels or sudden braking. You're not stopping every 12 miles because someone needs a bathroom break, a snack, or a photo op.

You're riding.

That doesn't mean group rides are bad. For many cyclists, the social connection, the drafting benefits, and the competitive push of riding with others are exactly what they need. Groups can make you faster, safer in traffic, and more motivated to get out the door on a cold morning.

But for others, the cost is too high.

The constant mid-ride stops that kill your rhythm. The rider who half-wheels every paceline. The unspoken pressure to keep up, even when your training plan calls for an easy Zone 2 day. The drama that inevitably creeps in when you mix competitive personalities, varying skill levels, and a lack of clear communication.

Solo riders aren't avoiding people. They're protecting something more valuable: the purity of the ride itself.

They're the ones who can execute structured intervals exactly as prescribed. Who can hold a steady endurance pace without the accordion effect of a poorly organized group. Who can stop for coffee, take a different route, or cut the ride short without guilt or explanation.

They've learned that riding alone doesn't mean riding lonely.

In fact, many solo riders report the opposite. They feel more connected to the road, the landscape, and their own thoughts than they ever did in a pack. They build resilience and self-reliance. They discover what their bodies can actually do when they're not constantly comparing themselves to the rider next to them.

One rider put it simply: "Ninety-five percent of the time, I ride by myself. And I wouldn't have it any other way."

So if you're someone who prefers the solo miles, you're not odd. You're not anti-social. You're not missing out. You've simply figured out what works for you, and you've given yourself permission to ride accordingly.

Whether you ride solo or in a pack, it's your bike, your road, your rules.
