Session 2: Excel for Everyone – From Basics to Data Visualization

Why Learn Excel?
Excel is one of the most powerful tools for organizing, analyzing, and visualizing data. Whether you’re a student, professional, or anyone working with numbers, learning Excel is incredibly beneficial.

Here’s why:
1. Global Use of Excel
According to Microsoft, over 750 million people worldwide use Excel regularly. It’s the #1 spreadsheet software in the world and is used for a wide variety of tasks. From students managing assignments and budgets, to businesses tracking expenses and analyzing data, Excel is everywhere.

2. Excel for Beginners: What Can You Do with It?
Data Entry & Simple Calculations:
Excel allows you to enter data in rows and columns and use simple formulas (like sum or average) to perform calculations quickly. For example:

SUM formula adds up numbers in a column.

AVERAGE formula finds the mean of a set of numbers.

Sorting & Filtering Data:

Among students, 89% of university students report using Excel for academic projects, especially in fields like business, finance, and data science.

This shows how Excel is not just useful for personal tasks, but is essential in academics and future careers.

5. Excel in Bangladesh
In Bangladesh, digital literacy is growing rapidly, especially among university students and young professionals.
According to a 2023 survey by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics, over 60% of university students use Excel for various academic tasks, including assignments, data analysis, and even personal budgeting. Many universities are now incorporating Excel into their curricula to ensure students are equipped with essential digital skills.

Student AI Usage: What the Studies Show

1. General Use of AI Tools

A large survey of over 12,000 Gen Z students found that 97% use AI tools for academic tasks—such as homework, scholarship essays, test prep, and note-taking .

2. AI Use vs Intentional Thesis or Academic Writing

In a UK study, students self-reported using AI for around 24% of tasks, while academics believed ~43% of university work involved AI—indicating a gap in awareness or purposeful use .

A Chinese study of over 3,000 undergrads revealed:

33% used AI "sometimes"

40% "often"

12% "always"

And approximately one-third admitted to copying AI-generated content directly in essays or projects .

3. Awareness vs Misuse

A survey at an Indian university found 72% awareness of tools like ChatGPT, Grammarly, Quillbot;

61% had used them at least once

Only 15% were frequent users

39% had never used them

And 42% expressed concern about over-reliance harming learning .

🧠 What This Means:

Many students use AI tools—but a significantly smaller portion understand how to apply them effectively for structured academic tasks such as thesis writing or research. Many use these tools casually or irresponsibly, without strategy or ethical guidelines.

💡 Why This Matters

Most use it without guidance—creating a risk of poor learning outcomes or academic misconduct.

That’s why Session 1 in our camp focuses on teaching structured, ethical AI use for research and titling—skills that many students don’t yet have.
