আসলে কোরবানি কবুল হওয়ার শর্ত পশুর আকার নয়, মূল বিষয় হলো নিয়ত। মানে আভিজাত্য প্রকাশ, লোক দেখানো কিংবা মাংস খাওয়া নয়, কোরবানির মূল উদ্দেশ্য হতে হবে স্রষ্টা-সচেতনতা।

সূরা হজে আল্লাহ্‌ বলেছেন,

আমি প্রত্যেক সম্প্রদায়ের জন্যে কোরবানিকে ইবাদতের অংশ করেছি। (আয়াত ৩৪) (কিন্তু মনে রেখো) কোরবানির মাংস বা রক্ত আল্লাহর কাছে পৌঁছায় না, আল্লাহর কাছে পৌঁছায় শুধু তোমাদের নিষ্ঠাপূর্ণ আল্লাহ-সচেতনতা। (আয়াত ৩৭)
