Yasuo Kuroki was a Japanese graphic designer and Sony’s in-house designer who created the iconic Sony logo in 1973. Working under Akio Morita and Norio Ohga, Kuroki refined earlier logos from 1955, emphasizing simplicity and modernity. His minimalist design, featuring clean typography, became a globally recognized symbol of Sony’s innovation. Kuroki’s work focused on clarity and timelessness, contributing to Sony’s brand identity. His logo remains largely unchanged, a testament to its enduring impact.
In 1984, Sony launched a worldwide competition inviting designs for a new logo. Nearly 30,000 entries poured in, and the company awarded the prize money as promised. However, Sony ultimately decided to stick with their original logo, running an ad in *TIME* magazine to politely say, “Thanks, but no thanks.”

Gerard Huerta, born in 1952 in Southern California, is a renowned American typographer and graphic designer who graduated from the Art Center College of Design in 1974. He began his career at CBS Records, creating iconic logos for artists like Bob Dylan and Boston. In 1977, Huerta designed the legendary AC/DC logo for their Let There Be Rock album, inspired by the Gutenberg Bible’s Gothic lettering. Featuring sharp, angular letters and a lightning bolt splitting “AC” and “DC,” it perfectly captured the band’s raw energy. Despite its global success, Huerta received only a one-time payment and no royalties, yet he remains gracious, noting the logo’s fame led to further commissions. His timeless design, debuted in June 1977, is one of rock’s most recognizable symbols, adorning millions of albums and merchandise. Huerta’s work is displayed in the Museum of Modern Art.

Miles Newlyn is a prominent British typographer and logo designer known for creating identities for major global brands. One of his most recognized contributions is the 2004 Unilever logo, developed in collaboration with Wolff Olins. The redesign replaced the older, more corporate-looking mark with a modern “U” composed of numerous small icons, each symbolizing a different aspect of Unilever’s vast portfolio, from food and hygiene to sustainability and personal care. Newlyn’s concept centered on expressing the company’s diversity within a single coherent symbol, turning the monogram into a storytelling device that conveyed Unilever’s mission of “adding vitality to life.” The icons within the “U” include representations such as a sun, DNA strand, palm tree, spoon, hand, and recycling symbol, reflecting both the products the company creates and the values it promotes. Alongside the icon-filled monogram, Newlyn also crafted the accompanying wordmark, ensuring a unified typographic voice. The logo has since become an influential example of identity design, praised for its clarity, depth, and ability to humanize a large multinational brand.
