Most turbo diesels engines now have EGR emissions systems to remove exhaust gases and diesel fuel smells from the exhaust, but this recirculating can eventually build up through the throttle body, causing engine lights to appear. Best solution is to remove the components and inspect. 

When free camping, the best solution is to be self sufficient, so this is possible with solar and  auxiliary battery options that can suit any requirement needed.
