In contrast to the face, acne on the body can be challenging to treat with topical agents. A greater surface area is generally involved and the area may be hard to reach!

In some patients, benzoyl peroxide wash can provide benefit as a keratolytic (to shift cells clogging pores) and anti-inflammatory agent. Other patients require oral prescription treatments to modify the hormonal response on the skin cell receptor. A period of oral antibiotics is also not uncommon in inflammatory acne to reduce the bacterial contribution. When body acne is severe (widespread and/or causing scarring) an oral retinoid (vitamin A) may be indicated. This requires consultation with a specialist dermatologist.

Here are a few key points before your first treatment:

1. No fake tan/tanning serums to the treatment area for a minimum two weeks prior to your appointment. This will ensure our settings are safe and we don't burn the skin!

2. No waxing of the treatment areas four weeks prior to your appointment, this includes plucking or tweezing.

3. We do ask all clients to shave the area 24 hours prior to their appointment. This allows us to spend more time treating you!

Anti-wrinkle injections and treatment intervals - the facts. 👩‍🔬📚

The toxin contained in anti-wrinkle injections is purified and bound to a protein. When injected into the human body, this protein is recognised as "foreign" - a bit like the components of a vaccine - stimulating the formation of antibodies to neutralise or attack the toxin-protein complex.

Experience with these medicines has taught us that, by spacing treatment adequately, we can reduce the formation of these antibodies. This is important, as antibody formation may be associated with a poor treatment response - ie. the toxin being neutralised before it can bind to the neuromuscular junction and cause the desired relaxation.

So, don't be tempted to have different areas treated a few weeks apart - this is risky! While a small "top up dose" to achieve correction, for example, appears to fly under the radar of the immune system, having different areas treated less than 8 weeks apart increases the risk of antibody formation.

The take home message? Treat areas together and roughly every 3 months. The risks are reduced and the appearance is natural, with treatment areas working in harmony together.
