FAKE GOLD BULLION
Here's a couple of pics of some bars that have just been brought into the shop. These bars are mostly copper and nickel. The packaging is very similar to the mint's actual packaging, and the colour of the metal is quite close to that of 24k gold. But the bars are a noticeably thinker to the trained eye and they weigh less than the specified 1oz.
Sadly this is an ongoing problem in the industry. Thankfully it is easy to avoid being stung-
- only buy from a reputable source
- if the deal sounds too good to be true.... it is! It's that simple.
Both The Perth Mint and Argor-Heraeus are producers of world class bullion products. Don't let this put you off buying their genuine bars from a reputable dealer.
Found your own gold frauds/scams - let us know and we'll post them.

Gold Purity
There are 2 common ways that the purity of gold jewellery is stamped on a piece. Either by stating its purity in carats e.g. 9k, 9ct, 18. Or stamping the purity in parts per thousand e.g. 375, 750 etc. Occasionally a jeweller gets enthusiastic and puts both types of stamps on the same piece!
So what does this mean for you and why should you care?
Well, in part, what you pay for a piece is determined by how much gold is in it. And if the time ever comes for you to recycle it, unless it is a rare item, the money you receive for an item may be wholly determined by the gold content. So its worth having a basic understanding of what these stamps mean.
Carats - for gold, is a measure of purity, 24 carat being pure gold. Other stamps indicate how many parts in 24 are gold. For example 9ct is 9/24ths gold or 37.5%. 18ct is 18/24ths gold or 75%.
Parts per 1000 are exactly that - 375 is 375/1000 or 37.5% or, as you now know 9ct.
So if your 9ct gold is actually only 37.5% gold what's the rest? You'll have to wait for the next post😊
Welcome to the Sydney Gold Traders (SGT) page. First let me introduce myself. My name is Leigh Prosser, in 2011, after 12 years in banking, I took the offer of a career change and started in the wholesale second-hand precious metals industry. Meaning that I specialize in buying gold, silver, platinum and palladium from business including Jewellers and Second-hand Dealers. A bit over a year ago I took on the additional challenge of managing SGT. This is when I started dealing directly with members of the public who wished to sell their metal.
Many conversations with the people, i.e. non-expert gold sellers, over this past year have shown me that there is still a lot of mystery and confusion surrounding precious metals. It’s my aim that this series of posts will help people to understand
• What it is they currently own
• Make more informed purchase choices
• Be confident in selling metal (jewellery, coins, bullion etc) that the no longer want
I plan to post every week on various aspects of the industry, covering off on many of the questions that people ask when they come in to sell their gold. However, if you have a general question please send it to me and I will try to post the answer to the page asap.
