It’s me, hi hello, I’m Kathleen and sparkly is my favourite colour 💍🩵

My love for jewellery started y o u n g and when I was about 9 or 10, my darling Dad knew a wonderful manufacturing jeweller named Ludwig Schmidt, here in the CBD of Sydney 🇦🇺

Fortunately for us girls and our Mum, our Dad was a gift-giver and we’d often meet him in town to visit Ludwig’s ‘office’ which was just on a regular floor in a regular building but also inside a cell block style metal cage.

He had a big swivel chair behind a desk. On the desk though was a perspex biscuit barrel full of gold ring blanks and behind the desk was a safe bigger than a fridge!

It was never overwhelming, we’d spend ages choosing stones for a ring for Mum or a necklace for my sister ~ it was magical 💫

This is why I founded GemShed Designs, these manufacturers are my people and I’ve had connections with them for a long time.

The metal smiths, the setters, the finish applicators, the diamond and gemstone suppliers, all of them, and I keep them close because they mostly prefer to work behind the scenes.

Me on the other hand; I love talking to people, chatting through their style, interpreting their ideas and favourite things and then designing a piece that tells their unique story.

So this is how we work together to create your dream ring, pendant or earrings 🫶🏼

We can meet for a coffee in person or a virtual coffee if you’re not a local. Not having a shop can challenge some people’s norms and I get that, staying non retail simply helps me to keep costs down for you.

Magic in the workshop 📸

I love seeing your pieces in production…raw metal and rough edges catching the light well before anything smooth or sparkly does. Sometimes I don’t want to share these and choose to keep them to myself, like a guilty pleasure 🥹

These ‘little’ earrings are going to be pleasantly plump danglers.

Off to the setter next week so not long now 🙏🏼🤩💛

Working on casting the findings or rather as I call them ‘the dangly-fish hook things’ for these earrings today at the workshop ⚔️

The setting has come out so nice and fatty-fat-fat and they’ll be approx 3cm in total length so the 5 cents is for scale on the fish hooks 📐

Also, how nice does quality 18K white gold look in its raw state without the polish and bright rhodium finish ~ I love a WIP 🚧 📸

Not going to lie, it brings a tear to my eye because well, I love jewellery and I love it even more that THEY love it so much they want to take a picture and tell me 😭🥹💙
