New Year’s Eve is overrated. Just ask our dogs and cats! But seriously, those fireworks do represent a major hurdle for the hairiest family members to overcome.

So I’ve put together the easy NYE Pet Planner. Their easy guide to a more relaxed night and brighter start to 2026.

So here you go.

☺️ CREATE A SAFE SPACE:
It’s their boom-proof room: Notice where they like to rest when they’re overwhelmed. Then, add their bed, some cushions and blankets to that area. A laundry is perfect

🙈 BLOCK OUT THE TRIGGERS
Flashes and Booms be gone: In their safe space, close windows, blinds and curtains. Then add some white noise or background music. Classical music is shown to be calming

🍃 BRING THE CALM NATURALLY
Trust the proven helper: All the research shows that L-theanine (the hero ingredient in my Calm + Collected treats) given at least 1-2 hours before the fireworks effectively reduces anxiety signs. Without sedation.

💦 DO THE WASHING…SERIOUSLY
It’s familiar and calming: Yes, you read that right. Put a load of washing on at 830pm on NYE. And then again at 11:30pm. The noise and vibrations are familiar and also block out any of the rumbles coming from outside.

👑 BE A MODEL PARENT
They’re watching you! They’ll always take their lead from you. So if you’re relaxed, happy and up for fun, they will too. Don’t do their worrying for them. They’ll know!

And Happy New Year everyone!

A widespread storm outbreak is expected to develop over central and northern New South Wales this afternoon.

There is a risk of severe storms across the east and north of the state, including Wollongong, Sydney, the Central Coast and Newcastle.

Any severe storms today will carry the risk of large hail (2cm or more across) which can damage roofs, cars and crops, as well as damaging wind gusts, which can lead to power outages and property damage.

What do you do to help your pets?

Are you aware of their ‘tells’? Their behaviours that tell you they’re uncomfortable?

Look for the following and consider checking in with your vet as to whether or not they’d benefit from medication:

Postural changes
Furrowed brow
Panting
Trembling
Pacing
Unusual clinginess
Unusual hiding
Excessive whining or barking
Toileting changes
Chewing/scratching/digging

Pretty much anything out of the ordinary that is before and/or during storms!

A calm, safe and familiar environment can help so much and sometimes they need a little extra so they can be comfortable in those moments when their nervous systems are heightened to a degree that is distressing for them (and you).

As a child we had a wonderful priest who invited all of our pets to church to be blessed. You may have seen a similar scene in the BBC’s ‘Vicar of Dibley’.

Today is the Feast of St Francis- the patron saint of animals, plants, nature and creation. Happy Feast Day!

For over 800 years, St. Francis of Assisi has been a beacon for the Church through his witness to the Gospel. The name “alter Christus”, a living icon of Christ, was given to him for his choice to live in poverty in order to encounter the Lord. His feast day is October 4.
