This is a side of Japan 95% of visitors never get to experience...
Welcome to Kyushu, Japan’s third-largest island and a region known for its dramatic volcanic landscapes, emerald-green valleys, winding river gorges and atmospheric onsen towns.
I've just gotten back from an EPIC 12 day road trip, and after 7 trips to Japan, I think it's been one of my all-time favourites.
I've just published my full guide sharing our day-by-day itinerary, top travel tips, what to see and where to stay.
Check it out here:

That feeling of pure joy ✨ who else gets THIS excited over waterfalls? 😍😍😍
What can I say, I’m just kinda obsessed 😏
This is Moran Falls, located in Lamington National Park. You can walk to it from or take the scenic hiking track 4.4km that starts a short drive from the retreat.
You can hike to the lookout to the base of the falls, or continue further and follow the creek to this scenic spot on top of the falls! Best viewed at sunset when the valley below begins to turn an orange and pink haze.
Save this for your Queensland bucket list!! You won’t regret it 😍
Rating everything we ate at Tsukiji Market in Tokyo! 🤤🤤
It gets so busy here, definitely plan to be standing in lines and don’t bring suitcases or big bags here.
We got there at 730am on a Friday morning and it was packed by 830am! We spent 2 hours here in total but you could definitely spend longer if you wanted.
Yes it’s touristy, but I’d still recommend coming here especially if it’s your first time in Japan!!
This has been my favourite cherry blossom spot in Japan!
During peak cherry blossom season, there are nighttime illuminations but we chose to visit early one weekday to make the most of this popular spot without the crowds.
Best time to visit: late March/ early April
🌸2023 illuminations: March 18 - April 9
Access: get off the subway at Meguro Station and walk 10 minutes down to the river. You’ll find cherry blossoms lining all along the river, so take a stroll along to find a spot.
Footage taken 29 March 2023.

There’s no shortage of shrines and temples in Japan, but this has quickly become one of my new favourites! (Pssst - and it’s free!)
The Namba Yasaka Jinja shrine is a stone throws from the busy streets of Namba, yet many tourists skip past this place. Don’t! This 12 metre tall and 7 metre deep lions head is an awesome sight to see.
The mouth is believed to swallow evil spirits and bring good luck to those who visit ✨
It’s the toilet that gets me 😂😂
Would you stay here?
I love the bright lights and neon signs in big cities like Osaka and Tokyo, but that’s just one side of Japan!
We’re spending one month in Japan, and since it’s our fifth time here we’re exploring a few different places than what might be on the typical first timers itinerary.
We found this incredible waterfall when hiking down Mt Rokko, found in the port side town Kobe (yes, the one famous for Kobe beef!).
We got a cable car up the mountain but decided to hike down on the way back and came across a series of waterfalls and hidden shrines.
📍Nunobiki Waterfalls, Kobe (only 30 minutes from Osaka)
Save this for inspiration for your next trip!
When life feels like a movie (but read the disclaimer below!)
I can’t believe our ONE MONTH in Japan is almost over! We’re ending the trip at one of the destinations I’ve been most looking forward to visiting, the Fuji Five Lakes area.
Since arriving yesterday, my jaw has been permanently dropped 😱. Fuji-San is even more mesmerizing in real life, and this area is full of so many incredible vantage points in which to see it.
Life is full of movie like moments, but also ordinary, everyday moments. And even moments where you feel frustrated, lost, and unsure.
One month of full time travel has actually taken more out of me than I was expecting. The pressure of exploring and making the most of a destination, versus finding some down time to relax, versus planning the rest of our (mostly unplanned) 3 months in Europe has taken its toll on me.
So TLDR; yeah life has its movie moments. But as always, Instagram is always the highlight reel so don’t forget that life isn’t always as glamorous as it may always seem.
Thanks for reading if you made it this far! ☺️✌️
